I have memories of hot Oklahoma summers and visiting my grandparents. They grew almost all the vegetables they ate. Whatever was ready, well we sat with grandma and prepared it. I have memories of shelling peas and snapping and shelling green beans.
My mother did not garden and so my kids do not have any memories like that of her.
I was just thinking of this as I was washing and trimming fresh turnips and beets from the garden. Did you do anything like that with your grandparents?

I think porches and grandparents are great. We should have more of both.

We have goose berries at the community garden but I have never used them, so I will have to learn.

@GardenGerty My grandmother made lovely gooseberry jam, and so did my mother.

My grandmother lived with us as we were growing up. Gardening was a big part of our day in the summer time. We helped weed, shell peas, etc. As we got older we helped with the canning as well. My kids helped me in my garden but they never knew what it was like to work a huge garden.

In working this community garden I am getting a feel for it. I never had such a large one by myself.
