Agitated Demise

“How true is the saying that the very highest in rank are always the most simple and kindly. It is from you half-and-half sort of people that you get pomposity and vulgarity” ~ H. Rider Haggard I have reviewed this post and changed my heading from "The vulgarity of money" to something more appropriate "Agitated Demise". The meaning should have been interpreted as the "vulgarity of spending money" rather and therefore the change. Good morning . . . my mind is a little agitated this morning, as I always try and see the positive in everything rather than find fault or attach any negativity. I miss my mom today! Her voice came up a few times in my head yesterday as I kept fleeing the thoughts that had me anxious. She would always say "some things in life are not worth the money nor the effort and dont buy things that you dont need!" well that rang true in my home yesterday as my hubby spent thousands of dollars on a SOLAR PANEL that we wont get to enjoy its full worth in our life time. I was angry at him and for that I am quite ashamed today, but the wasted money still remains part of my anger. To keep up with the Jones' is one way of saying it, how I feel, is a certain vulgarity in the spending of money on things that matter if seen, rather than on those that matter when needed. You may comment gladly! photo is of a windmill - my own

I tend to agree with @LadyDuck Anna about the meaning of vulgar. I don't think it's appropriate to use vulgar here as far as spending money is concerned. It may be not prudent, careless or even foolish to spend a large sum of money on a solar panel. But having said that I think there are benefits to installing a solar panel. Besides paying less for electricity he is doing his part in saving mother earth!

I know that "vulgar" it's not a word I would associate with money.

I do not know if we have the same meaning for "vulgarity". What this word suggests to me is having or showing poor taste or manners, but also rude or offensive language or behavior. I would not use this for spending money for something that we do not need or we will never use. By the way, I would be mad at my husband too.

I suppose he didn't discuss it with you first before he bought it , that's why you are agitated ?

No he did discuss it with me - but we had a plan of six other things to do before this . . and this was never decided actually until he went on a fishing trip with the BOYS! - thats why I am mad, but I told him that there will be a day that I will have to bite my tongue when I want to say "I told you so!"

I don't blame you for being cross. Expenditure of that sort needs to be discussed first, then both parties agree to it.

it does but it will take 18 years to get our money back. They are darn expensive and we are only 3 in the house and I feel a wedding coming soon - next year perhaps then we are two.

I sometimes use "vulgarity" to refer to excessive, showy or ostentatious spending also, so I see what you mean here. The solar panel was expensive, it sounds, but it may increase the value of your house, at least. I don't really blame you for being upset, though.
