Favorite Breakup Songs #9 - "You Oughta Know"

#9 in my Favorite Breakup Songs series takes us to Canada, specifically Ottawa, birthplace of seven-time Grammy-winner Alanis Morissette. The music industry has been profiting from breakup songs from the beginning, and will continue to do so long after I'm gone. There are breakup songs, though, and there is "You Oughta Know." Anger, hate, vitriol, you name it, Alanis spews it after learning her former beau is seeing someone else. And then she spews it some more. "You Oughta Know" was a respectable hit in Morissette's native Canada (#'s 20/21 on the Pop and Rock Charts, respectively.) It faired better Down Under, a Top 5 hit in both Australia and New Zealand, and in the States, #6 on Billboard's Hot 100. Some top-notch names played on the song, notably Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, and Tom Petty keyboardist Benmont Tench. For some reason, I like breakup songs. Don't know why, I just do. And I love "You Oughta Know." Unlike seemingly everyone else, I really don't care who it's about. (The actor, the hockey player, I could care less.) I just think it's a great breakup song.
