The Side Effects of Tropical Storms

Although dealing with a deluge of rain yesterday was not fun to say the least, the good news is that our area survived Tropical Storm Colin with only minor flooding and wind damage. But even more important than that, Colin also left us a nice parting gift as he was swiftly swept out to sea off the eastern coast of Florida: today was a picture-perfect and beautiful day here in north Florida! Unseasonably mild temperatures, clear blue skies, very little humidity, and a gentle breeze greeted us today in the aftermath of the storm. It's such a shame that such a beautiful day will be short-lived, but anybody who has ever visited or lived in Florida in the summer will know that we'll take any good weather day we can get in the summer...even if it only lasts one day! Yes, tomorrow we'll be back to our normal summer weather pattern, with high temps in the mid to upper 90's, humidity in the 90% range, and afternoon thunderstorms that you can set your watch to. But just for today, all us Floridians breathed a collective sigh of joy for our short-lived reprieve from summer. How was your weather today?

Yes I agree, today was nicer than the super hot days! I am sure we will be sweating again in no time. Lol

I am hosting the state swimming championships at my pools this weekend here in Gainesville, so I'm hoping that the normal Florida summer weather doesn't return until at least next Monday!

Glad you're having such a lovely day. I don't think I could cope with such humidity - or at least I wouldn't enjoy it.

@ElizabethWallace I can't stand such high humidity either. I need to move somewhere where the air is colder and drier.

Me neither. I don't understand how people stand it. I would go nuts.

@moffittjc With asthma, high humidity feels like trying to breathe through soup.

Did you have let Colin go East? If he visits Britain we will know who to blame.

@Asylum You guys really need to do something about your weather! Does the sun ever shine there? We have some Native American Indian rain dancers that we can send your way to work their magic and make the rain go away! lol

Colin should have hit you guys already, but probably just as a rain maker. Once it exited the east coast of the US, it quickly picked up speed and headed out into the north Atlantic in the general direction of Europe.

That does sound like an ideal day. Today we've got it cool with blue skies.

I've been loving our clear, blue skies we've had this whole week, and it's made for some amazing sunsets. The heat has returned, but it will be a few more days before the humidity returns, so right now the hot days are somewhat bearable. By the start of next week, we'll be back to our miserable summer conditions of high heat and high humidity and severe afternoon thunderstorms every afternoon.

@moffittjc That makes me sticky just to read that. I hope the rain helps the humidity.

@just4him The high humility is what helps produce pop up thunderstorms this time of year

I love rain, and I love cold, but I'm not sure if I would love a cold rainy day. Although it would be very good for cuddling and snuggling! Exactly how cold is it there where you are right now?

@VivaLaDani13 I never realized it got that cold in Australia! I am totally jealous, I wish it was cold here right now. We are in a major summer heatwave right now, and we've been setting record high temperatures. But it does look like we're finally going to get some storms today.

@moffittjc I do enjoy the sunny days too but because I have seen way too many of them, I'm yearning for more colder / rainy days. it's 10 degrees right now which I think is 52 F.

Hopefully, you didn't get too wet, and you had a good time! It looks like we have a pretty good weekend on tap here in north Florida, although it is expected to be very hot!

@Babs0630 The only bad thing about rainstorms in the summer in Florida is it just makes the humidity worse afterwards, so then you become hot and sticky!

I think I'm like you...I love rainy days! I always love when these tropical storms hit because I know we'll have several days of heavy rains! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when we have heavy downpours!

A lot of people are reporting about the rain and storms that passed through Florida. We experienced some wind and strong pour downs but thank God no flooding. I'm glad you and everyone in your community stayed safe. I don't know when more rain will head our way but hopefully no flooding will be involved.

We made it through the storm with very little flooding and wind damage, so we were pretty lucky. The big issue we'll face in the next several days is that all the rivers here will start to crest, causing widespread flooding along their banks.

Well said, I would also like a day like this. I WISH it occurred here more frequently but it is either hot or extremely cloudy or humid or raining cats and dogs. Today it is cloudy with high humidity.....hope the weather turns for the better soon. We Kolkatans breathe a collective sigh of hope for that.

We have had some of that rain you got too but not much. I was watching the storm on my iPad and was worried about you in Florida. Two of my sister in laws live in central Florida and it looked scary to me.

I'm sure your sister in laws have probably told you by now, but central Florida was spared of much of the effects of the tropical storm. My meeting that day was in the Orlando area, and we didn't get any rain at all the whole day. The storm hit more up in the north Florida area, although it did rain a bunch in central Florida the next day!

@moffittjc, We finally cooled off after about five days of 90 plus and will have a stretch of the 70s and some morning clouds for a few days. Your day sounds like it was just right.

But we're back in the high 90's again already. The only saving grace right now is that the storm sucked away all the humidity, which I think it is going to continue to be nice through the weekend. I believe that starting next Monday we'll be back to the normal hot/humid conditions we normally experience this time of year.

Yesterday the sky was blue most of the day, with lots of clouds in the morning. The temperature was about 68F/20C, and the humidity was about 65%. Pretty close to heaven, but the clouds need to leave a little earlier in the day for me to call it Paradise. Glad you had an enjoyable day, and not much damage from the storm.

@ElizabethWallace Yikes! That's quite high! What do they say we should never go over, like 30-35% of our pay? I think mine is right at about 1/3 of my pay right now, but in January/February of next year I'm thinking about finding a nice little place close to our downtown, and close to where I work. Because of the high real estate prices there, my housing payment may jump up to match yours at that point!

I'm sorry, but Colin is not the name of a tropical storm. 'Colin' conjures up a nerdy librarian with a fondness for his mum. {Apologies to any non-nerdy Colins who stumble upon this!}

Good to know that your area survived Tropical Storm Colin and that she left hurriedly. We had a beautiful sunrise this morning, after which there was a downpour but now, the sky has brightened again with the rain gone.
