Coconuts are natives to Asia-Pacific region of the world. The great Indian Epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata mention about the coconuts. Their significance, today has confined to the Hindui religion only and they play a role in a variety of Hindu rituals.
The coconut will have three dots which are associated with the three eyes of the Lord Shiva. The outter surface will be rough and the inner will be tender and sweet similar to the heart of the Almighty.
The Hindus break a coconut during all festivals and seek blessings from thei God/Goddess. During Aadi festival many coconuts are broken over the heads of faithful. In the coastal regions people present offerings of coconut to ensure calm and bountiful sea. In Kerala, state of India, the coconut flowers are placed in rice bowls and displayed uring wedding ceremonies. When taking up a new job, a business venture , blessing a new vehicle or blessing a new home the Hindus break a coconut.
