Would you accept a hug from a complete stranger?

I was just thinking about a story from quite awhile ago now about someone who would walk through the city and give people hugs. And in fact, I believe this sort of thing has happened with a few different people. This one person in particular went into the city and held up a sign that said "Free Hugs." I like to see the bright side of this. Yes he will be a stranger to many people and people who are strangers to him but it seems nice that he wanted to bring a bit of joy to others. Trying to make us feel happy and cared for. We walk past strangers all the time not knowing their name, what they do, their personality. So we often don't have any reason to communicate with them. There is way too much evil going on in the world. A hug wouldn't fix everything but at least it's a nice gesture. But then again, that's just the thing. The evil in this world is caused by evil people. Who's to say that this hug they speak of wouldn't then turn into a violent act? Would you accept a hug from a random stranger in the street?

It would caught me by surprise. My mind would be trying to process what just happened. But I don't think I would go up to a total stranger with a "free hugs" sign. My first thoughts would be the guy's a loony or there's a hidden camera somewhere and I might be an unwitting participant in a candid camera style TV show. My point is...How have we reach this point of cynicism?

@josie_ lol I never thought about the candid camera thing. I guess it would depend on each individual. Fear of others, no trust in others etc. I guess sometimes we get so caught up in the bad news that we read or hear that it changes how we see things. We may become frightened of others from all the media. Who knows.

@VivaLaDani13 _ Nothing wrong about being cautious and put on your best smile in case you're on camera.

@divinebee Hey welcome to MyLot! Hope you enjoy yourself here! So what reasons do you have that would make you accept a hug and what are your reasons for not wanting to?

I wouldn't. I use to before but now NO... I was approached by one of this guys giving free hugs and he looks decent but once he gave me a hug I felt something down under that I shouldn't feel and I'm a dude! so NO!

@ronc510 oh dear! Well I can understand why you wouldn't do it again then. What if it was a female wanting a hug? Would that bother you?

On an average day, I probably would not accept a hug from a stranger. But there are days where nothing I do is right, everything is miserable, I feel lost, hopeless and abandoned. On those days, I could use every hug I can get!

@moffittjc awwww! Yeah I know what you mean. Although, I did that once with a neighbour I just met and I ended up crying my eyes out while she was hugging me lol When I am down, a hug usually brings me to tears! Here is an internet hug for whenever you get down again. Because internet hugs totally work.............

@VivaLaDani13 Would you cry like that too if I ever hug you in real life?

@VivaLaDani13 I understand why he did it. It was necessary for you to cry! To let it out. I would have done the same if I were in his place. Thank goodness he was there though. I firmly believe that holding things in hurts worse and causes double the damage and long lasting one too. Some kind of release is needed. Either by singing, writing, online, cooking, or whatever helps one relax. Just anything. Some people bake like crazy when they are upset, hurt, anxious, angry or sad. It is their way of dealing with things.

@rachz_kisses lol yeah I think I am still undecided too. For me, I think it would depend on a few things. Like if there are any others around, how many other people they are hugging, if they seem friendly enough etc.

With the things going the way they are I would not let a stranger hug me.

@Marcyaz I think that is a fair enough answer. A hug seems friendly enough but yeah, doesn't mean the person giving hugs is a good person.

I may not turn it away. I guess it would just depend on the day. It's nice though that some want to try and brighten the world in this way. It's a nice gesture.

@dodo19 I agree. I think a lot of people do wish for a better place but may not know how to do it. And turns out you can start by just giving someone a hug. Any small deed can go a long way. :)

It would depend for sure on what my brain and heart tell me that moment. I will be inclined to yes though. A warm hugs can help in many different ways. Sadly, many have become scared of many things in today's world.

@thesids That's a good point actually. Someone could be really down and just wanting a hug. Or maybe a person is in such a bad mood that they would probably yell at the hugger. Who knows. Exactly right!

Wow, you got popular quick. Everyone loves hugs. It can be very off guard which makes it fun, because ok, feel the love, why hugs are cool, if you cannot hug there is no love.

I don't mind. But I am male. I have less chances of getting a hug.

@skysnap lol nah I am sure a male would still get hugs too. I do understand if a male doesn't want to hug another male because guys usually get weird about that. *rolls eyes* But it can still happen.

I might if he had a sign up like that, otherwise I'd be very suspicious of someone trying to hug me without asking me first.

I heard about this. If it was a busy street in the middle of the day, sure, why not? It's possible the person would do something evil but I would think that wouldn't be as likely on a busy street were people are watching. aI'd be leery to do it after dark though.

@RichardMeister That's exactly what I thought actually. It would be a dumb move to do anything horrible with so many witnesses around. Whereas a dark place with little to no people around would make alarm bells go off for me.

It would probably be over and done with before I had time to back away - which is fine - as long as they didn't pick my pockets while they were hugging - which has been done before but not to me.
