My Favorite Xeriscaped Yard

My Favorite Xeriscaped Yard

In my part of California we are still in a drought. That's why many people have stopped watering their lawns and are letting them go brown. Others have turned to xeriscaping. Xeriscaping is landscaping with drought resistant plants irrigated with a drip system to make more efficient use of water. I don't have enough money yet to do that, so my lawn is still brown, but I love what this neighbor has done. When I get enough money together, I want to do something similar. Fewer people in my neighborhood have lawns every time I walk to the corner, it seems. Has xeriscaping caught on in your neighborhood yet?

That is a very creative way to respond to the weather conditions. It's not caught on here - no need. Here is my lawn. This was taken last year - the flowers aren't quite as advanced as these yet.

That's a beautiful garden. Is that a real cat in the middle of the lawn or an ornament? Love all those flowers.

@bagarad It's an ornament -it's supposed to scare off the real cats from scratching in my flower beds. Doesn't work

Wouldn't it be wonderful if those with not enough water could somehow get hold of the excess in some other area of the world?

I would put in desert landscaping so you use even less water. Just look at some places in Phoenix, AZ and you can see what I mean.

they did a lovely job 'n i'm so glad to see they didn't jest go "stone". ya might check with yer water company, many've rebates'n the like if'n ya tackle such a project. a lil incentive to get folks to quit wastin' water'n plants/grasses/trees/shrubs that aint native. 'course, takes 'bout 3 years to get those xeric plants well rooted to where they can withstand such 'xtremes. i live out'n the country myself, most folks've left their grass to die 'n the weeds take o'er.

Weeds Growing through Rock Mulch
A lot of our neighbors have just "gone stone" as you put it. It doesn't work very well unless they put that stone over plastic to keep the weeds down. Here's a photo of someone's yard without the plastic under the stone.

I've heard the term but haven't seen a lot of evidence of it yet although a lot of people have got rid of their lawns.

I think lawns are part of the "We've always done it this way" mentality. Conditions have changed, and people are finally opening their minds to new landscaping ideas.

@bagarad That's very true. A nice lawn was once very desirable but those days have gone now.

That is a beautifully landscaped yard. I would love to have mine look like that. It's even better that they have found a way to make it eco friendly and beautiful.

Since I wrote this, the yard has gotten even more beautiful as the plants have been maturing. Now that we've had lots of rain, I expect we'll see more flowers.

I live in California too! Southern part, and most people's lawns are left to die. Some people have cement, some have rocks, not many green yards anymore.

So your area doesn't have many xeriscaped yards to replace the old lawns?

The word was new to me in April. I had to find a word that started with "X" while doing the A-Z challenge that would fit with my gardening theme. I started looking through indexes in my gardening books and food this word that was perfect -- xeriscaping.

One friend f mine did it. It looks pretty good. They got some sort of rebate check for doing it...was it from the State or the County? I'm not sure.

It has not as people still insist on lawns and roses. Your neighbor has the right idea and it can be attractive as any lawn.

I actually like the xeriscaping better because it extends the garden area. I never saw much use for the lawn. It's nice to have in back if you have children who are playing, but most people who have front lawns do it because it's expected and it's always been the thing to do. It's always seemed silly to me, since it has to be mowed and watered. I much prefer flowers and herbs.

Ocassionally I see something like it. A few years back we had a bad drought and every yard dried up. All car washes closed and water was rationed. Now it seems another drought is expected here. I'm always as saving of water as possible and we live in an apartment so it didn't effect us too badly.

It is easier to conserve water when you aren't responsible for maintaining the landscaping.

@Jabo is the one with the nice lawn. My neighbor doesn't have a lawn. He has mulch with drought-resistant plants to make it pretty.
