A stupid thing I've done: Drove without my headlights on at Night

Everyone makes mistakes and one stupid thing I have done in the past was...
Driving at night without my headlights on! 10 years ago! Not intentionally but at that time I was a fairly new driver and I wasn't familiar with the car I was driving.
Surprisingly, I was driving two other friends and both didn't mention to me that it looked dark. I asked them if my headlights look like they're on, and they said, yes! Luckily I drove only down the street and once I dropped off one friend, she let me know. No wonder I was having a hard time seeing!
Is there a stupid thing you've done? Or have you done this too?

Wow I would be scared! This was a one time only and I was already scared. Now with automatic features, I won't forget anymore!

How did you get away with that all night? Talk about lucky. I think you need more observant friends. LOL I haven't been out and about in quite a while so haven't done anything to speak of.

@infatuatedbby .....And probably no reason to think they weren't on too.

@celticeagle Yup! So it was a stupid/funny moment at the same time because everyone in the car thought they were on too!

It was only down a few blocks! Totally, I should have told them to get out of the car and check. I guess the street lights and other cars made it bright enough to think mine were on? I was inexperience then, surprisingly I did not even get honked too!

It's a common mistake made by people who are unfamiliar with the car and also that the surrounding lights may be bright enough for them not to notice.

I've seen several peole do this. I tend to flash my headlights at them, but they tend not to notice. The most bone-headed thing I've done was let a hitchiker drive when I was exhausted (many years ago, when people still picked up hitch-hikers). We wound up in a ditch somewhere in Wyoming (in the snow). I managed to drive us out.

I have flicked on some too but they don't notice either. I would be so scared to pick up hitch hikers, glad the person wasn't crazy hehe and you got out of the snow!

@infatuatedbby Back in the day, I picked up one Hell's Angel (he was cool) and one crazy person (he wasn't cool). I also picked up several really nice people. Wouldn't do it now. No longer have my 20-something sense of immortality.

Not that I'm saying you'd do this at all, but that is like the #1 way to get pulled over for DUI. Just an interesting tidbit.

Never will happen for me as I don't drink! BUT I thought about this topic because a local news near me said a couple of men got pulled over because their headlights was off BECAUSE they were stealing the car. They didn't get too far

Don't they get fined? Or at least some jail time? I guess it depends what count they're on!

@infatuatedbby Around here, car thieves don't get much more than a slap on the wrist.

Hahaha!
I've done that before.
We had a friend over to play games one night. It got late. I mean, really late. So I told her I'd drive her home.
We got about halfway to her house when I was pulled over by the police.
Problem? My headlights were out.
In my case, I had forgotten that my husband had been working on the van and had disabled some part. So while I had turned the lights on, they weren't actually working. And the lights from the grocery stores, etc. were enough to keep me from realizing I didn't have them on.
Okay. The story gets better:
The officer, a woman, tells us it would be better if we turned around and just went home. I apologized to my friend and told her she could sleep on the couch and I'd take her home in the morning.
One block from my house, I was pulled over by a different officer.
I about hit my head on the steering wheel in frustration.
"Let me guess...my headlights are out?" I say. And then tell him that I was already pulled over, we were on our way home and that, in fact, my house was right there! I could point to our home.
He called and checked in with the first officer that had stopped us, and then let us go. I'm guessing he watched us the whole way to the driveway!

Wow! You would totally not expect to get pulled over by two policer officers within being only a few blocks or so (half way!). It would have been nice if the officer just followed you to your friends to drop her off, since you were literally half way.
I am glad you didn't get a ticket either. You got off with nice officers. But I would be very frustrated as well, hehe.

Hahah. Yes, you got real nice officers! Did your friend end up getting home? Or hey! The officer could have gave her a lift home.
At night it isn't common for one police officer to pull you over. Here I always see they call two cars for back up.

We joked that we must have looked really suspicious. Two redheaded women driving late at night? Who knows what we might've been up to!?
Yeah, if I drove her all the way home then I would have had to drive all the way back again without lights. The officer didn't know how far we had to go and didn't want me on the road.
I was grateful to not get any tickets. I guess the police can be reasonable at times. They're like, real people!
