#7 in my Favorite Cover Songs series takes us to both England and Wales, homes of New Model Army and Tom Jones, respectively. New Model Army are a post-punk band that has been at it since 1980, famous for, especially early on, protest songs. Tom Jones is, of course, Tom Jones, a legend who has been decorated by the Queen (and my grandma had a thing for him when I was a boy, as did many women!) In an unlikely pairing, the two parties hooked up for a version of The Rolling Stones' classic, "Gimme Shelter," part of a four-act CD, different bands performing the song for charity. "Gimme Shelter" has been covered by seemingly everybody. I love the Sisters of Mercy's cover, which came close to being the choice here. It's the New Model Army/Tom Jones thing that gives this the edge. Plus, it rocks!
can't find it on tube, so... all glory goes to rolling stones, new model army & tom jones,

@teamfreak16 I fought for the New Model Army in English Civil War shows - the band, along with The Levellers, takes its name from that period

@arthurchappell - Justin Sullivan even used to call himself Slade the Leveller, as I'm sure you know. I just always thought that was cool.

They really are. I wish New Model Army were more well known over here.

I hadn't heard of New Model Army before, but I really like this cover. I love how clearly you can hear the lyrics, Tom Jones does have a great voice. It's not as true of the Stone's version. I like the harmonica too.

They are one of my all-time favorite bands, and I've liked Tom Jones since I was a kid. I can't go wrong here.

I remember that song but it was by the rolling stones:
Decided to put this together to chronicle the use of the UH-1 "Huey" in the Vietnam War. This clip compilation is dedicated to the military helicopter pilots...

Tom Jones is no stranger to unusual collaborations. Remember he covered Prince's Kiss with Art of Noise.

That's true. And that was before this.
