I'm Glad I'm Not Sean Lennon

I was on FaceBook a little while ago, and someone re-posted something that Sean Lennon had posted, having to do with the recent shooting in Orlando. Anyway, I hadn't really thought about him in a long time. To me he's still that six-year-old boy that lost his dad, but of course he's not. So, I went poking around to see what he's been up to, and he has been playing some music off and on. So, I feel some affinity with him, because my dad also died when I was six-years-old. Even though I have missed having him around throughout my life, I am kind of glad that nobody knows who my dad is. Every single thing I could find about Sean and his music, all people could say was if he looked like his dad, or sounded like him, if he was as good as his dad, or not as good. Then of course there was the odd dig at his mom, who most people seem to have a low opinion of. That can't be easy, because she is the one who raised him after his dad was gone. Anyway, here is a video of Sean Lennon and some of his music. Take it for what it is.
Friendly Fire is a cinematic suite of songs by Sean Lennon, son of rock legend and former Beatle, John Lennon. His new work shares a wealth of musical styles...

He looks a lot like his father, but I do not agree that he sounds like his father. I never had an opinion about Yoko Ono, that was a personal matter between the two.

@norcal I agree, but people only understand what they want to understand. Nobody would care of Sean if he was not the son of John Lennon.

I guess the thing I wonder about Sean is, what would we think of him if we didn't know who his parents were? I feel bad for Yoko; after all these years so many people love to hate her, but still profess to love John. He was all in on everything they were doing. If people had any respect for him as a man, they couldn't believe that she was an evil woman controlling him.

@LadyDuck Perhaps some people would just like his music.

I've always liked Sean, and he's essentially the spitting image of his dad in many ways. However, I've always felt particularly bad for Julian Lennon. The guy has gotten snubbed every which way imaginable, and yet someone has still managed to become a seemingly stand up guy. I've heard that his relationship with Sean has always been great, but not so much with Yoko. Plus, there was that whole getting snubbed from Paul McCartney's wedding thing, which I'd probably be pretty mad about too, especially if McCartney wrote "Hey Jude" for me. I heard he considered Paul more of a father than John ever was.

Which wedding was that? Sean may be the favored son, in that I'm sure he was fixed for money and all that. Neither of them can ever escape being compared to their dad, whom they both bear a resemblance to. I can't pretend to know what their relationship is like. If they did music together, it would surely be a financial gold mine, but who knows if that's anything they'd be interested in.

@norcal This was Paul's most recent wedding: Considering that article, something tells me that we won't be seeing any Lennon children collaborations any time soon...
Julian has been hurt by a series of perceived snubs - including not being invited to Macca's recent wedding.

@Brandinian Julian got a raw deal with the will and all, but his public complaining about it is really not attractive. He and Sean claim to be close, and Julian said he'd settled the financial things with Yoko to stop hurting Sean. I hope he lives up to that.

it must be really tough for him and his brother Julian Lennon too

It's an odd spot to be in, especially since they have both gone into music. Sure, the name recognition opens some doors for them, but then they are expected to live up to the legacy. People don't listen to other musicians for the first time and think they are a failure because they are not as good as John Lennon.

That was pretty good. Believe it or not, that's the first time I've ever listened to him. I used to play Julian on the radio, but never heard Sean.

It seems he has done a lot of session work and taken some long breaks from music. I think it was out of frustration with the whole John Lennon's son thing. I guess he also does not have to worry too much about making a living, so there's that.
