Hey, give me your money!

"Hello! My name is Mr. Scam and I'm going door-to-door to try to convince you to give me your money! I've pretended to meet your neighbors and they all agree I come from a great fictional company! Now if you'll just let me come inside and scope out the layout of your house, I can not only take your money but I can add you to a list for potential future robberies..." Yup. We got that knock at the door again today. It happens every few months. It's always a different individual. Though they sometimes work as teams. I was planning on being polite and giving a nice, "No, thank you." Before shutting the door in the guy's face. My husband was a bit more blunt. The guy wanted to argue, which was bold since my husband isn't a little guy. It wasn't until the dog came into the picture and made her displeasure known that the guy turned tail. He practically ran off our porch. These moments really make me appreciate our dog. Okay, okay. My husband, too!

@Genipher It's nearing end of Financial year here and scammers think it's a good time to scam people (especially the vulnerable elderly) using pretenses that they're calling on behalf of the tax office...

@sishy7 We fell for it once, years ago. A young man (in his 20's) came by, selling magazines. Said he was saving up extra money for college. Like fools, we forked over money for a subscription. And, of course, it never came. Even more embarrassing, he asked us to put a sticker on our door to let the other "students" know we'd already been solicited. Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me!

I do not get door to door people. Pretty much, I did have a couple of guys driving a refrigerated truck offer to sell us fish or chicken or something when we were moving. We did not even have them come up to the house. Even if they had the frozen food they were talking about I did not know where it came from or how it was processed. You are correct, though. People who go door to door are suspect.

I've had the meat-sellers come to our door before, as well. Twice. I usually just tell them I can't afford the meat and that we're in hard financial times. But I agree. I don't want to be buying meat from who-knows what source! I'll stick with my well-known farmer friends or the grocery store! Unless it's the Girl Scouts, I find door-to-door salespeople to ALWAYS be suspect.

@Marty1 Hopefully you can trust your nephew not to scam you. Especially since you know where he lives!

@Marty1 Yeah, it just doesn't seem safe to buy meat from an unknown source. My mom used to get treats for us from Schwanns, but they were (well, and still are a well-known company.

If strangers are going to knock our door at night, I will definitely don't open it. We also have two dogs that roam around the house and mo one attempts to enter the gate. In time like this, we really need to be vigilant.

We had a phone scam this week. Someone claiming to be from the tax department wanting money for supposed tax fraud. I reported them to the governement scam hotline and the tax department and they said they have been running hot this week. Sadly they will trap a lot of people into giving them details they can use.

People fall for it all the time, The word should get out that the IRS never calls anyone. I read something the other day about someone that paid up, and many people are afraid and pay.

@RubyHawk But it doesn't take long to call the IRS and check up on the situation. It's not like they have a car out front full of IRS agents, ready to take us down if we don't comply ASAP.

I figure if there is a problem with my taxes, I'll get a notice in the mail. And then I call to see what's up. For the most part, companies don't call with information like that. I wish more people were aware of that fact.

@Genipher Not sure though. l've lived in two countries so far Bulgaria and UK and things are much safer in both. ln my experience at least. l remember meeting some american girls last year and l found it funny how paranoid they were being about stuff but l guess it's because life's a bit more dangerous there.

@Cherganski It really depends on the area. Chicago? Detroit? New York? Close to the Mexican Border? Eh, you have to be a little more careful. But there are plenty of places in the U.S. that are perfectly safe.

I don't get any door to door sales people here, except sometimes the trucks come by trying to sell me meats. I don't buy anything from traveling vendors.

I just hate to see those sales people. I know they are only trying to earn a living and I try not to be rude, but I say no I'm not interested and close the door. Sometimes I don't even open the door if I look out the peep hole and see a suit and a brief case.

@Genipher Anything to get them away quickly, when I was younger and unwiser I let a salesman talk me into buying something I didn't need with his sales talk, it took me months to pay for it, so I learned my lesson.

Our guy just had a clipboard. I didn't see his vehicle anywhere around, either. Thankfully we have a locking security screen door. I love that thing. I can answer the door without being rude and talk through the mesh. Safely.

He said he was from a roofing company. But he acted just like the others that have come before him. And our roof is fine. If the dog and hubby hadn't spooked him, I could have looked up his so-called company on the BBB...

Here it is people supposedly ringing up from banks and insurance company. They get you to reveal you ATM card number and next thing you know your cash has vanished. And inspite of warnings and notices in the ATM to never never reveal your secret pin , you'll be surprised at the number of people who fall for this.

How easily people are duped! We get warnings all the time here, as well. Not everyone listens. I think it's a lot of our elderly folks that end up falling for the scams. I wish there was a better way to catch the scammers and put them out of business. But they're so sneaky!

I don't mind talking to them...through our security screen door. But when they get pushy, it's nice to have the hubby and dog backing me up. And I definitely do NOT want them snooping around our house. We don't have much worth stealing here...I'm more concerned for the kid's safety.
