Nice little pet (for someone else)

I had never seen a Sugar Glider before a woman came into the store where I worked with one in a little bag. He was a baby, she said, and they have two adults and some other little ones. Sugar Gliders are in the possum family and are marsupials like kangaroos (they have pouches where they carry their young around). They are common in Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia. The "glider" part of their name indicates their ability to glide from one tree top to another like a Flying Squirrel. The woman showing the little guy off said they make great pets, but I noticed with a Google search that their are "homeless" Sugar Gliders available for adoption. Have you ever seen or owned a Sugar Glider?

No, but I wonder what they are doing in the U.S. I would think that these would fall into the illegal to own category here.

@JamesHxstatic Okay. I had no clue. I sure hope they don't run off. We don't need more non-indigenous critters running around messing up the balance of nature.

poor lil critters, there ought to be laws 'gainst folks bein' able to've 'em's pets :( i've seen a few'n my lifetime, but'd ne'er wish to own one. seems people'll breed anythin' if'n they believe they can make some money off such....there's a gal sellin' skunks (price dependin' 'n their coloration) 's pets - descented 'n vaccinated. she gets $200-$400/ea. jest saddens my heart.

That is a shame. People ought to leave wild things alone.

I didn't know they could be pets. Aren't they wild? I never seen one of them before.

@JamesHxstatic Hmm. I knew someone in high school who brought in a weasel into class. I can't think of the name of that mammal. But I knew they could see in the dark.

They do grow in the wild, but are bred to be pets as well.

No, I have never seen a Sugar Glider let alone own one. I don't think I'd want one either.

I had not seen or heard of one either. The woman was in again this week with the little one's big sister.

One of my daughters had a similar pet ... a so-called flying squirrel. However, it kept biting her. They were small pets, but she eventually got tired of it and sold it back to a pet store.

I think some little sugar gliders have a less than perfect life as pets but I don't really know a lot about them.

I'd never even heard of one until now. I thought it was a baby raccoon until I read this.
