I must admit that I haven’t seen a receptionist who is not good looking. I am not sure if it is a stereotype issue. Moreover, I had also noticed in some classified ads with the requirements needed in every establishment. That is an applicant with pleasing personality. Is that implies that an applicant should be pretty especially in the position title for the receptionist? I think it is not proper and falls into a category of discrimination to the applicants. Seriously, most of the receptionists are pretty girls and attracts the people with a great smile. I am not saying that I prefer pretty individuals in the reception area. Any thoughts about it? @tech40 That's the sad part. It appears to be discriminating. Business is a business. Profits are really important for them. Pretty girls are more on its privileges to have the job. @cacay1Pretty girls have all the advantages.

They are also front lines as to how the guest or even applicants will be welcomed by the company.

@Letranknight2015 I agree that these pretty girls are the more frontline of the company. @cacay1 There are some people who have face value but brainless. I met a lot of these people.

Perhaps the receptionist somewhat stands for the company, so it is better that she is not only beautiful, but also young. Of course I don't think it is correct. But perhaps the requirements for being a receptionist is not so high, so many girls who graduate from school will prefer to have a job like that. And they hope they will have a promotion in that company after some time.

I have seen girls at reception area who just look beautiful, but Oh my god! they are so dumb and rude. Some don't even know proper English or any language required.

@youless I am not sure if it will be the best way to be promoted in the company. Unless, if this receptionist had her further study and meet the requirements of the company; then there is a great chance to be hired to another position and be promoted in that certain field.

I do think there is a requirement for a receptionist since it is the face of their department, or store, etc.

@ida123 No wonder why cosmetic products are so in demand for an aspiring receptionist.lol That's the reason why most young girls wanted to have white skin just to get a better job and can nail the job interview without difficulty.

This thing has always made me sad. Not because they need beautiful looking girls neither because I am not beautiful. But sad because society has a very different vision to see beauty. I use to work for a very reputed organization and to my dismay I had found out that they had an entire department which included beautiful looking girls in client servicing areas. Why? Well, because client wants to see good faces and not the work, maybe? This is all just annoying. Because it makes people feel that they are less fortunate because god did not make them as beautiful as the girl sitting on reception area. I don't have much to say but, I think people should judge professionals by their work and how presentable they are and not by their looks.

@Shavkat I don't understand why are we judged by our skin colour, race and religion. We all forget that we are made up by nature and somethings can never be changed.

It's only in the Philippines where you see young and attractive people working in reception areas or assistants in restaurants and bank tellers.. But here in Australia it's not the case.. Of course, being presentable in important, but it's their ability to do the job that counts whether they are attractive looking or not..

I guess its one of those job like female flight attendants where the person really has to have a great smile and a pleasant manner of speech. I was told to recruit girls who were pleasing on the eye.. though it was not written on the job description it was a verbal instruction to recruit only female front desk people who were pleasing to the eye. I don't see that changing in a long while.

@Shavkat As far as I remember in my 15 years as HR executive/manager I have never rejected a candidate on the basis of looks.. We always looked for other positions to offer a smart and deserving candidate. Secretarial jobs were another option.

I think I will agree with the qualification of having a pleasing personality for a receptionist. Why? Because they are the first one who will receive the guests. They are the first representatives of the company. They are the ones who give the first impressions about the company. So if they are not presentable, maybe somehow it will affect the company. There are receptionists who are not really pretty but they have the best smile and the most accommodating behavior.

I think that is only in the Philippines. Pleasing personality or being beautiful is not a must here when working. It is only a bonus. Important is, you have brain to do your job, hardworking and friendly to the customers. Yes, it falls in discrimination. I think that is why most of the called "beautiful " Pinays are arrogant. Sorry to say that but I have encountered plenty of those people in our country. The pretty women I encountered here in Europe are humble.

That's how it is. Front liners should be good looking and with pleasing personality. Even in the bank, tellers who are the frontliners should be with pleasing personality, to invite more clients. I was hired as a bank teller first before I was assigned in the other departments of the bank.
