More Than A 'Thank You'

Most Philippine schools started classes last June 13, so I bought her one 'sando' (cotton sleeveless camisole) and one short cotton bloomers to wear under her school uniform.
After a few days, I texted her to ask if they are tight or loose since I seldom see her and was just estimating the size. I even used one salesgirl as a mannequin.
She replied by thanking me.
"But are they tight or loose?" I asked again.
Finally she said yes, they fit just fine.
That's all I wanted to know.
See, I don't expect "Thank yous" from anyone when I buy them something, and don't think negatively of them if they forget.
I just check to know if, one, they actually received them in good condition and, two, if they will use them.
And it's okay to tell me they will pass it on to someone else.
Guess I'm too practical for manners?
On the other hand, when they tell me, "I've been looking for something like this," or "It's so useful I want to buy another," I get a sense of accomplishment. It's like all my observing, analyzing and searching hit the jackpot! Hahaha!

I like what you've written but do you find that people are slower to say thank you nowadays? Some of the young ones never seem to bother to say thank you for cards or gifts. I'm a bit old-fashioned I guess but I think people should say thanks. Good manners are important.

there was a time i would say "you're welcome" ahead of time, just for a laugh.
oh, even the old ones forget nowadays. same with "excuse me" and "sorry."

Its sad that you had to be the first one to send a text message inquiring if the gifts you gave fitted perfectly or not
I'm old school and whenever a gift is received its always automatic for a "thank you" to follow ... no matter how big or small the gift might be.

@mammots it's no big deal to me. what matters is that it fits so she can use it.

@brokenbee when there's an occasion or even when you just feel like it?
are you referring to family members only?

i'm more annoyed at those that don't say 'excuse me' and 'sorry.' those are the people i find inconsiderate @shiva49.

@hereandthere Lots of what we took as basics have gone out the window.
Even face-to-face interaction is on the way out - siva

I would be very glad and will give such gifts again if ever I heard them say or pm me on FB and say "thank you." It is part of good character so the giver will know that she appreciated the gesture so much.

I can understand what you are doing but I am just disappointed how people could be ever so slow with their expression of gratitude compared to your timely charity. I am sure a word of gratitude does suffice but to follow up with another good intention and still getting that indifference is really something here.
Anyway someone higher is watching over you and would reward you bountifully in due time. So don't be discouraged and keep it up.

it was a lucky guess since i seldom see her. yes, there are times i've bought the wrong size and they told me they gave it to someone else.

You are very kind and I think it is most rude not to thank you for your thoughtfulness. Don't let people take you for granted.

@hereandthere
That is nice because if they use what you buy for them then to you that is thank you enough right?

It does just seem proper that someone would say thank you or let you know how something is!

A smile and a simple thank you are fine with me too when I give something to someone.
