Rich or Happy?

Are the rich truly rich? It’s a funny question to ask these days but a valid one. If tomorrow every single bank and credit union closed and everyone’s credit and debts were erased what would the world around us look like? If you were only left with what was in your bank accounts how drastically would your life change? It’s human nature to feel as though money will solve all our problems and make us all happy but this is not the case. It’s not our faults though, this is just how we’ve been brought up to think. Here’s a quotes from Benjamin Franklin to ponder: “Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. There is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more a man has, the more he wants. Instead of filling a vacuum, it makes one.”

What I like about my country people is that they can seem to be really happy despite not having that much money. Our family and happiness is more important to us than anything else though money is important to survive in this world, it's not the main reason to be really happy.

@vsvs56 Yes, that's true. Competition starts at birth for them and pressure follows.

I completely agree! I wish everywhere was like this! Such a great way of thinking.

@toniganzon oh my, that's unfortunate. Different cultures and upbringings. South Korea is known for a brutal work culture though, a lot of pressure and competition.... Just unfortunate..

Great quote. I'm sure that's a quote that Warren Buffet and Bill Gates live by, they help a lot of people with their money (although tax write offs, still good).

I believe that people can be rich and happy at the same time. Those who say that money can't buy happiness obviously don't know where to shop or what to do with their money.

This is called temporary happiness. Materialism, is what is wrong with society today.... Collect moments, not things.. Now if you were given an unlimited amount of money... would you just buy things, or would go out and see the world and do things.....

What an interesting quote! I do agree that being rich might not make you happy, but if you were starving and worrying about the bills, you would not be happy as well.

It's not that we're brought up to think money is important...it's more that we're brought up knowing that the world doesn't go 'round without it. And that's not our fault. I would love to get back to a bartering system. Or have a culture where we can haggle over prices. But there is no wiggle room for that. At least, not in the U.S.

Both are important, but impossible to have a good balance. Also, I guess it depends what your definition of rich is. I work very closely with very rich people and I'll tell you, they are definitely not happy people. They aren't happy because they are trying so hard to stay rich. I think it's important to be able to live a comfortable, happy life. I'm not sure why it's so important to be "Rich". Here's another quote from David Suzuki which I really like: We’re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone’s arguing over where they’re going to sit."

I like to believe you can be rich and happy, I think it takes balance. It's nice to have "nice" things, but there's always something "nicer" then what you have, so will you always be out searching and trying to get the best of the best to be happy. Spending time with geniune people makes me happy, now if I had more money to add on top of that then those experiences with these people would be enhanced a lil more. If the banks closed and all I had left is what's in there now, I could still be happy, just be poor as heck....lol

So true . However , we need money to sustain our living . Though just enough would already make us happy as long as the family is intact and happy .

I said it before and I'll say it again, I work closely with wealthy people and it's rare I come across genuinely happy "rich" people. They are usually one marriage #2-3, depressed, have ED and are very unpleasant people... or in Vancouver they haven't earned that Audi R8 and their parent gave it to them..... which is a whole other topic of discussion..
