When my great-aunt died in the 1990's, my mom flew up to New Jersey. She wanted certain things that were at Lib's place that she wanted as part of her "memories."
One thing she brought back was a Chenille bedspread.
But the one thing she was willing to go to some lengths to bring back was her grandmother's rocking chair. It had been being stored in the basement of Lib's place, since it had been her parent's, and Mom's grandparent's place before. So, this chair was over 100 years old. The "caning" had broken out and it needed some TLC to be pretty again.
So, when she flew back home, the chair went to South Carolina with her brother and his wife.
By this time, my sister was living in eastern Tennessee. One weekend, some time later, my sister drove down to Uncle Joe's and picked up the chair.
She took it back to Knoxville where she had found someone who could re-cane it and give it the TLC it needed. Without Mom's knowledge, she also got a brass plack put on the back that listed all of the "owners." She started with our great-grandmother with birth and death dates, then Lib's and then she had Mom's name and birth date.
It sat in Mom's living room, and then her healthcare center room, almost never actually being used because it was built for someone of a lower stature than us. It held a stuffed cat that looked like Suki. Mom seemed to have forgotten by then that it was Cat she loved so much rather than Suki.
I believe that when Mom died, my sister took it back to Knoxville with her.
I know she plans for our niece to get it at some point, but is mostly waiting until she really starts appreciating stuff.
I wonder if she's gotten Mom's death date put on it yet...

@MsTickle That is a GREAT idea! back in 2011 I went to Kansas and we went to "The Sod House Museum". They had a ton of stuff donated by families in the area that were from the time Kansas was settled. Interesting stuff, but not really as old as I like my stuff...

I agree. My sister has a little toy "hutch" that was our mom's when she was a child. Our grandfather brought it down to Texas for me when I was a tot, and my niece played with it in Mom's kitchen when she was a tot. My sister got it because she's the one who refinished it. I know she plans for, S, our niece to get it at some point. If S has a little girl at some point, it may be sooner rather than later.

@LadyDuck I got mine years ago, but I do still live in the same town. My brother had a stuffed animal, it was always a mystery to me until a few years ago what it was (a monkey) that he got when his daughter was born. For a while it was at his condo, it may be at her house now.
