I'm Raising a Baby Bird

Yesterday, I rescued a baby bird from the mouth of my cat. Looking at the poor thing, I had little hope that it would survive. It was lying on its side with its mouth open, but I could see that it was still breathing. I put the baby in a shoebox lined with rags, put the lid on, and put it in a safe, quiet place. An hour later it was still breathing. In another hour, it was sitting up and opening its mouth for food. After searching online for advice, I soaked some kitten chow in water and fed it to the baby. He ate eagerly. Today I added meal worms to the menu. I have made a small dog crate into a cage for him. He has feathers and can sit on a perch. I believe it is a baby wren.

He seems fine this morning. I think they like to sleep more than I had anticipated. I got up this morning early to feed him, but he wanted to sleep in. I was a little worried, but an hour later he was up and ready for breakfast.

Oh so very nice of you. It is really very difficult will feed a baby bird, good that the bird came to realise your good intentions.

I don't think he has much choice. He may think I'm the devil, but he will take food from me.

Usually the little birds die of shock after such an encounter so I give you all the praise for saving this one's life and enabling him to make a recovery. He will continue to take up quite a lot of your time and attention but I do hope he grows up and is able to return to the wild.

I thought about that, but I it would already have happened by now. I hope so too.

I am lucky that this bird is not so tiny. He has feathers, and can perch. Feeding every hour seems to be working OK.

Since we attached a bell to the collars, we haven't had any bird massacres, but spring is just around the corner, so I expect to see some birds on the carpet again. Good luck with raising it. I wouldn't dare try with my mob.

I hope the bell continues to work. I can't seem to keep a collar on my cat. Every time I get him one, he comes back without it.

@norcal Morph manages to muffle his bell in all that fur, except in the middle of the night where every scratch sets it to tinkling!

I hope so too. I've never successfully raised a baby bird, but it's over 36 hours, and he's doing OK.

Did the cat get an attitude and refuse to have anything to do with you for the rest of the day when you took the bird away? An ex-girlfriend's cat did that to us when we took one away from him once.

You know, he kind of took it in stride. I think he's used to my angry reaction when he gets a bird.
