My first day on the new call centre job, so nervous and excited. The six new starters were allowed to start an hour late today, though I found the start time from tomorrow is 8.45 am, not 9 am as stated to us previously. There were other odd rules such as not being allowed to wear outside coats on the work-floor and having to surrender our mobile phones during working hours, which makes me reluctant to even take mine in at all. It normally suffices to switch them off or onto silent. After a rather patronizing militarist paperwork completion exercise – “You will now write your full names in the first box. Do not fill in your address until told”, etc., we got a quick similarly toned health and safety briefing before getting to listen in on calls. It was obvious that most calls were not and could not go to a sale. Only one sale went through all day, hardly encouraging to new staff being told through the interviews how easy it is if we just try. We were then invited to try selling ourselves so the last two hours were spent in live calling though we are officially listed as training for eight weeks. It doesn’t bode well, but at least we were let out nearly two hours early though from tomorrow it will be a full working day every day. Got my new membership card for the real ales society, which renews annually. It comes with discout vouchers for various pubs and beers over the next 12 months. Arthur Chappell

That sounds a bit soul-destroying. If there was only one sale made all day, presumably from an experienced salesperson, it certainly doesn't bode well. I hope you aren't going to be paid on commission.

@jaboUK basic pay plus commission but such firms soon lose patience with low sales

This certainly does not sound like a very inspiring job, but with few to pick from it is difficult to be fussy.

@Asylum it'll do for now but that's about all - daren't quit as it would crush my welfare too if I stopped work voluntarily

@Poppylicious they are often a horrid environment where any failure is treated as unforgivable

I think this would be a difficult job but it's a start and will keep the welfare people off your back for a while.

eh, every day is a little money in your pocket. If you figure out who IS good at sales, they are the one to try to cultivate and learn their secrets
