Did you know that homeless animals outnumber homeless people 5-1 and that only 10% of animals in shelters were spayed or neutered upon arrival? Stray cats are estimated at 70 million in the United States and that doesn't count other countries. The worst part is that roughly 4 million dogs and cats a year are euthanized in animal shelters and that doesn't count the ones killed on the street or who starve to death.
This is a huge problem in all countries and it has to stop. There is a program called TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) that is available in some areas. This is where strays are picked up, neutered and released back into the area where they were found. Granted that doesn't help to feed or water the animal, but it does prevent unwanted pregnancies. Please find out if your area has this program and if not, talk to your congressmen about getting it instituted.
If your pet is not spayed or neutered, there are also clinics that will charge minimal amounts ($25-30) to have the procedure done. It is a responsibility that you cannot ignore. You never know if and when your pet may get out of the house or yard.

such a huge problem with such'n easy solution, eh? 'course, there's no such 'cheap clinics' here 'n we paid $175 to've our pup spayed, $85 fer the cat's a kitten. regardless though, 'tis the responsibility 'f the owners - if'n they cannot afford such, they oughtn't 've pets. jest my opinion.
then ya toss'n those pup/cat mills who're 'fter a buck 'n lil concern o'er the health conditions, nor who purchases their litters. don't gimme wrong, there's some who're most responsible, but that seems to be diminishin'.
the same goes fer horses. folks breed 'em coz they can, hopin' fer the 'high dollar offspring' that rarely comes - the rest'f jest sold off to whome'er. many abused, starved 'n abandoned 's well.

@nanette64 yer most fortunate to've such available. they've started some clinics here, but the waitin' list's huge. one's lucky if'n they can get'n within a years time with all the tryin'.
i agree with ya both, but sadly they don't do much to folks 'round here fer such outside'f takin' what horses they've got left that're'n bad shape :(
i can't believe my eyes!! i 'twas under the impression that we'd successfully managed to stop those slaughter houses from re-openin'. my heart's broken to find such not to be true. i'd love if'n ya could p.m. me the info'n those 'n i'll see what fires i can get lit to stop that abuse. a most horrifyin' 'xperience fer the horses... seems humanity stops where there's greed 'n profits to be made....dang 'em all to hades.

Here in Texas we have a traveling bus set up as a clinic that any county can pay $350 for and the vets will spay and neuter all day long for the price of $10 per animal @crazyhorseladycx . I'm close friends with the Animal Control and he's told me many stories of abused and starved horses. His opinion and mine is to shoot the owners. We also have 3 horse slaughter-houses here. They were closed but have reopened. The Orientals love that.

Outstanding @amadeo , if only we could get more people to do it. That's the reason I had an animal shelter on my property. At one time we had 106 dogs and 20 cats. It was a no-kill shelter and we made darn sure to have them spayed/neutered and trained before they were adopted. Even the adoption procedure was strict. We were the only agency in the entire county.

@nanette64 For the reasons I gave above people should be educated to get rescue dogs and cats.

Yes, I am aware of this sad dilemma.
TNR will only work if a county can find a Vet who will do the surgery really cheap, we here in El Paso no longer have one but I can recall some of my coworkers getting together and trapping the stray cats to have them fixed .... that was years ago, now there are too many mice getting into things.
It's a shame humans never seem to learn to live with nature. Many of us have a need to try to domesticate as many species as we can which leads to the kind of sad dilemma you've written about. I for one have all my pets fixed and if we all did the same then eventually there wouldn't be anymore strays or unwanted pets which means people like me would have a hard time finding the loving companionship I've come to enjoy.

I don't know why the mice are a problem @rebelann . If there's one in my house you can bet it doesn't stand a chance against my troop of neutered males. Considering the way things are going and the number of unwanted animals, I think there will be a lot around for a long time.

Too many people think animals are disposable @AbbyGreenhill and that ticks me off.

This is so true and sad. I love animals, especially dogs. I want a dog from the shelter so bad! II'll wait until my cousin builds me a fence separating the driveway.

I love animals--have had dogs, cats and birds and I know some people are worse than animals but still keep in mind that in many countries including $25-30 can supply a person with 21 meals. Do you put up a homeless person who could be homeless--such as being a war vet-- for many reasons versus a pet owner who doesn't take responsibility 24/7 for their pets? Also in many cases if people would get a rescue pet in many cases they will be neutered or spayed by the rescue place.
