I may be opening Pandora's box - but what the heck!

One of the girls I'm friends with on Facebook has a 7 month old boy...he is an adorable baby, and I don't say that very often. The mom posted on Facebook saying something like, "Can't wait to climb into bed with that little baby of mine." I don't think she is climbing into his crib LOL - so that really means he sleeps in bed with his parents. After reading some of her previous posts, yes, the baby sleeps with mom and dad. We have a dog that sleeps on the floor or in her own bed - not in ours. Our bed is for us, just the two of us. I don't think babies need to sleep in adult beds. Once you start that habit how do you get them to sleep in a crib without a fight? Call me old fashioned, I've been called lots worse, but I feel that babies should sleep in their own beds. What are your thought on this? I may be sorry I asked, but what the heck I can take it! Photo: pixabay.com/en/crib-baby-bed-baby-cot-cot-bed-446361/

you will get some guff but I bet a lot of us agree. I actually think its dangerous having a small infant sleeping with two larger humans. I wonder how many crib deaths are actually big bed deaths, I never took my babies into my bed as they had their own cribs.

Everyone needs their own space, including babies.

My thoughts? That whether you're right or wrong, you'd better hold your tongue on this one. No faster way to lose friends than comment on their parenting methods.

People criticize those of us who never had kids, I'm used to it. but I think common sense goes out the window at times.

@AbbyGreenhill I've never had kids but that doesn't mean I can't have opinions. But I've learned to keep them to myself - and my other friends without kids.

@boiboing I've never believed in keeping my opinions to myself which is why sometimes my foot is stuck in my mouth.

At that age I would be far too worried about rolling over during the night and harming the child.

@Asylum Of course, if he did it intentionally he would be sleeping at the local motel and not in this house!

I don't believe in babies sleeping in beds with their parents either-at all. It is so difficult to get them in their own beds and it's not safe either.

Our children never slept in our bed - we had a 'baby monitor' which let us hear if the baby woke up or made a noise. They always slept in their own rooms.

All of us kids slept in the same bed with our parents as babies. In India, there is no concept of nursery for babies and stuff. Nowadays the influence of western culture has brought in many new things but at the end of the day it is still the same. Babies are always to stay with mothers and fathers. The beds are large enough to give necessary space needed and to prevent accidental rolling over. If the fear of rolling over is still there, one of the parents can sleep somewhere else. But mothers aren't going anywhere. If I were ever have my own child, I will be too anxious to sleep with my baby out of sight for the night and alone in his/ her own room. It just wouldn't do. Although I understand the benefit of parents and babies having their own space and preventing the bad habits from forming.

Your country has different ideas so it's only normal you would want to do as others do in your country. Most of my my age grew up in our own room in our own beds!!

Here many babies sleep in their own cribs .This way, parents don't disturb the baby, for instance some parents snore thunderously.

I know I did - back then my parents only had a double bed and no way would all three of us fit in it LOL. I was 10 pounds at birth.

I don't sleep well at all, I toss and turn most of the night so sleeping with more than just my husband is too much for me.

@Jessicalynnt We had a memory foam mattress at a vacation rental last year - we both hated it and had to sleep in the guest room in a smaller bed that was more comfy for us.

I have never been able to do this, I was always terrified of knocking the baby out of bed, rolling onto it or something terrible. I always kept them in my room close to my bed while they were tiny, then moved them on down the hall when they were older.

Abby, how boring myLot would be if everyone "played it safe." As long as we're not really insulting people, a controversial subject can be very stimulating!

I would worry about the safety of the little one for sure. Our fur kids? The smallest dog sleeps with us and two of the cats sleep somewhere on the bed. Our largest dog? She has a bunk by herself.

@AbbyGreenhill Our smallest dog is a Blue Heeler. Many folks call them a velcro dog. And cats? Its a sign of trust between us when they choose to sleep near us. Bonding.

I don't much care where other people's children sleep. When I got up in the night to nurse my baby, I took her into bed with me and she nursed herself back to sleep while I slept. Sleep is golden.

I don't have any kids so I don't know. But there are co-sleepers you attach to the bed if they want to be that close. But for me not knowing how I sleep (or if I roll, toss, turn) I cannot sleep with a baby in bed with me. I wouldn't feel that is safe but I know some who do! And some who don't.
• United States
16 Jul 16
@AbbyGreenhill Yes, I think so because they want to bond with the child. But it's a no/no for me because I would be paranoid and can't sleep. (I can possibly toss and turn when I sleep, so no thanks!) And I had a co worker who had a child that was 6, and til' this day sleeps with her.. Because he won't sleep in his room.
