This Cracks Me Up

I just saw a huge red banner on Weather dot com. It read, “EARTHQUAKE OFF FLORIDA COAST!”. I was curious, since people in Florida like to make fun of earthquakes in California. I cannot tell you how many times someone from the East, Mid-West or South has told me that they expect California to break apart and my half fall into the Pacific Ocean. But in small letters underneath the headline were the words, magnitude 3.7 and 3 miles down (under the sea). Yawn. We don’t even roll over in bed with a 3.7 magnitude quake. It wouldn’t cause a tsunami either, not even a ripple. With the number of earthquakes in Oklahoma daily now surpassing those in California (by a lot) and one off the coast of Florida, will the rest of the country stop picking on us any time soon? Or, do they need something negative in my home state to balance out the lovely weather and gorgeous sunsets? Just curious.

CA already has enough negative things to balance out the sunsets...drought, the economy, stupid "squatting" laws... I'm not helping, am I? Well, if CA does suffer from a massive earthquake, you'll at least have peace of mind in the knowledge that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be there to save everyone!

Right, except that we have the eighth strongest economy (if we were a country) in the world.

@ElizabethWallace Really? I thought CA was struggling economically. Shows how much I know, eh?

@Genipher Our Governor took over six years ago and has done a fabulous job. We all really like him. He took the state from a deficit to a surplus. He has also been building a "rainy day" fund (a real misnomer, since many of our problems are linked to lack of rain). He is also socially aware and very "green".

I had no idea Oklahoma had so many earthquakes. And I agree - I think people are just jealous of your climate and lifestyle.

It changed in Oklahoma when fracking started. Some "experts" say that fracking isn't the cause, but I don't believe in coincidences. It is the only thing that changed, so how could it not be the cause? And I agree with your last comment.

@ElizabethWallace Fracking is the big issue here at the moment too.

@JudyEv I'm so sorry. I wish these people would put the health of the planet above their bottom line. Won't happen, I'm afraid.

I agree that any earthquake under about a 5 is not worth mentioning. All that fracking is causing a lot of earthquakes now in the Midwest.

@ElizabethWallace - It is very ironic that Oklahoma is getting so many earthquakes now!

@DeborahDiane Yup, and they already had way more disasters without adding these.

My daughter grew up with earthquakes here, but was unaware that they have more in Oklahoma. What irony!

So far, so good. You do get more than your share of horrible storms. Stay safe.

We only had one earthquake. It was back when the earthquake happen in DC and it trickled down to NC. But it was a small one. Well Florida should be the next state to have a earthquake.

It seems logical, but unless the fault lines are connected (and that would be impossible with these distances) the D.C. quake could not cause the N.C. or Florida quakes.

We too have daily earthquakes believe it or not but they are so insignificant most are hardly felt. There is a great website that informs you by text when there are earthquakes over 6 anywhere in the world.
