Calamari

Earlier this week hubby played hooky from work. His sister and niece were in town so we all decided to go to the beach for the day. We toured the Newport Aquarium and watched the kids turn into sand monsters on the beach. It was great. The pièce de résistance was dinner: We had reservations for a cute little place with an ocean view. Sis-in law orders an appetizer. Calamari. I'd never had it before and when I heard what it was, I refused to try it. Not because I don't like trying new things but because I don't like fish and in my experience, anything and everything from the ocean has a fishy taste. However, the kids asked to try some. So Auntie passed down a couple of plates. I was prepared to laugh as they spat out the food in disgust but...they liked it. I sat there in shock. My picky eater...the one who refuses to eat soup, or meatloaf, or spaghetti...actually liked calamari?! What in the world?! And all the others were gobbling it down, as well! "Well, maybe if you cooked like this..." hubby grinned as I complained about the inconsistency. It was a good thing he was sitting so far away from me... So how many here have tried calamari? Tell me, does it taste like fish? Because besides hearing, "It's good.", I never got any other feedback from these newfound calamari lovers.

@Genipher haven't had it for years but I don't remember it tasting fishy. if it's overcooked it can be rubbery though.

That's what everyone stuck in this Matrix thinks... So it really doesn't have a fishy taste? I'm thinking I missed out on something good now...Dang it!

@Genipher I like regular fish well prepared and that is about it. My wife is highly allergic to shellfish and who knows what else. It isn't worth the risk of even having it around.

I love calamari. It has to be cooked right otherwise, it will be rubbery. The secret of the calamari is in the sauce. The right sauce will make the calamari taste a lot better.

@Genipher yes, it is usually deep fried. With what you wrote, I'm guessing, it wasn't cooked properly. The oil wasn't hot enough hence, the meat came out rubbery.

Ours was fried (is that the normal way to do it?) and our one-year-old sucked the fried stuff off but couldn't manage the actual meat. From my vantage point it looked rubbery...but everyone seemed to like it, sooo....

Hey, your opinion has tons of value! Looking it up, I find that squid is "tougher and cheaper" than calamari, which is "more tender" and "expensive". Another place said that calamari is just a fancy name for squid. So maybe you HAVE tried it.

Calamari is a squid dish minus the ink. But why is the picture above is of an octopus? Or is it? lol

From what I just learned, calamari is squid. I'd have to count the legs on the cartoon creature to see if it's a squid or an octopus... Same difference though, right?

@sol_cee You can offer me anything as long as it doesn't come out of the ocean. Do you have any crawdads aka crawfish aka mudbugs?? I like those. Just not crab or lobster. Those are two different kettles of, um, fish.

I love calamari. To me it just taste like chicken nuggets with all the breading on it that it is fried in. It is a little chewy but you are eating squid so that is expected. My sister in law also doesn't like fish but she does love to eat calamari because it doesn't have the fishy flavor.
