Living closer to nature

It's stormy again tonight. Heavy rain, lighting all around me. It's truly beautiful. I love a good storm.
With the back and front doors open to take advantage of the cool air, smelling the wet, rainy smell through the whole house, I am thinking about how close to nature I live. Sure, we have a heater - and a swamp cooler - but we take much advantage of things like natural air flow, blocking off or letting in light, and the natural cool air masses trapped by our sturdy cinder block walls.
Result: a little more discomfort, lower electric bills, and much more awareness of what's going on around us. We pay attention to the weather, and things around us like the bugs, and plan accordingly.
Living closer to nature may be more work but I really enjoy it.
A branch of light
cracks down,
plasma booming
the clouds play catch
with balls of thunder.
Water sprays like rooster tails.
Water fills the air
up, down and sideways
blood-warm mist
and steam in my eyes
I breathe the wine
of a new mown lawn
and savor the rich
mesquite-green wind.

I live in Tucson, Arizona. I see plenty of cars and people - because I live right in the middle of the city - but in a neighborhood with plenty of trees, where the animals (like lizards and birds and huge beetles) have learned to live near people.

@Rohvannyn It is good to have the beautiful sites that buildings and vehicles can't give. I am lucky to cause there is a park next to us and it is enjoyable to go there.

@velvet53 I agree. There's something special about walking under the pines at the park, even though everything's kept mown short and it's not very wild. I also love walking in the alleyways near me - plenty of plants and wildlife there.

we'd not be able to do that this time of year, even at night it is usually 95-100ish. I would love to live somewhere more middle range in temps

@Jessicalynnt You have my sympathy then. I can't stand humidity - I turn into a sticky puddle.
