The magical alleyway

There are alleyways near where I live, one of which is also a bike trail, and they contain the most surprising things. They aren't your normal alley. It's faced by the back walls of everyone's houses (most people have walls around their property, or at least strong fences) and these paths are a bit wild. The things people grow in their gardens intrudes into them, and wildlife lives there. I walked down one a few days ago and saw beautiful red cactus figs ripening, mesquite trees hanging over back walls, a stand of bamboo of all things (not what you'd expect in a desert) and other interesting plants. I also saw doves, a big lizard, and a big fat cottontail rabbit! All this in the middle of the city, during a walk to my park. As I am able to walk farther, faster, I'll be exploring these alleyways more. I know there are hawks and quail here, and I'd love to see them too. Sometimes we even get roadrunners. The alleyways in my neighborhood are like a magical nature maze!

@Rohvannyn I've had a love affair with alleys since the first time I skipped school and explored some. You've found a grand world to wander in. Congrats.

@Rohvannyn So very long ago. I was so young. I remember collecting windshield glass cause I thought the greeny color was somehow magical. And peoples back porches and stairs- us kids thought of that space as a place to play not somebody else's property- like coming on a little clubhouse or other world.

@sallypup I had a few moments like that as a kid. I remember collecting blue beach glass, as much as I could. I thought that was cool too.

My concrete alleys feature raccoons and coyotes.
