Jokes and recipes not allowed in myLot

Singapore
July 31, 2016 7:25am CST
I read in the guidelines that posting of jokes and recipes at myLot are not allowed. For recipes I can understand the reason why. Why would anyone be interested in boring recipes which can be found everywhere in the internet domain? But for jokes I don't quite understand as there is value in jokes. Besides being entertained, the reader can derive health benefits from the funny jokes. You know what they say: "Laughter is the best medicine". "A joke a day will surely keep the doctor away" - that's my version. So do you think that jokes should be allowed?

You can still write amusing and entertaining posts without telling an actual joke.

@jaboUK Yes, that certainly can be done. Thanks for your advice.

Jokes usually only have a very limited range of possible responses - "Ha ha!" or "Good joke!" is about the extent of it - besides, most jokes posted are simply copied from somewhere else. The same can be said of recipes per se. If someone wants to illustrate a valid discussion topic by using a joke, then it can certainly help but just posting a joke for its own sake does not further the purpose of the site.

@owlwings I think your reasoning is apt with regards to getting meaningful responses and comments. I'm not aware that sharing of jokes and recipes is considered copying as there are many who share jokes and recipes with their friends, colleagues etc. @Raelove The reason why I said recipes are boring is because I do not cook and so those set of carefully laid out step by step instructions are meaningless to me. I guess not many share my view.

@Raelove i agree. earlier i stumbled on a discussion about reading cookbooks by silvermist and the comments were interesting. i can cook a few basic dishes and am not a foodie at all.

@Raelove that's what she and other commenters said, that they read it like a novel, which was novel to me, and i enjoyed reading it, even though i'm not a foodie. i couldn't suggest the post to you but you type her username or cookbook in the search box if you want to check it out. i usually look at the ingredients and procedure, too, even if i don't end up doing them at all, just to satisfy my curiosity.

I always say that the person or company paying the bills can have the rules that they choose. If you want a joke website, create one. myLot makes its way in the world with Original Material. Jokes and recipes can be included in original material but they are not original by themselves. The point here is to discuss and neither a joke nor a recipe by them selves can generate true discussion.

@GardenGerty You're right that the paymaster makes the rules and if one wants to get paid, one has to follow the rules!

I think the idea is to promote discussion. So many people would post copies of things and not discuss them I think is the logic behind it. Or maybe people think we are not funny.

@Bluedoll When there's no response either they think it's not funny or they're so busy laughing that they can't respond.

I don't usually question platform at all. It's their rules and their direction. We just work with what we have.

@skysnap I just hope to get some opinions from others about this matter not so much as questioning the rules. Anyway if enough people feel that the rules are too rigid and need to be changed then there's a possibility that it can be changed.

@succeednow You know there are lots of websites where you can go for a daily joke if you want one. MyLot wants original content. I do not think that there is an original joke on the planet. You can include a joke or recipe in a post as long as that is not the entire meat of the post. You need something to discuss.

I think if jokes were allowed, the quality of mylot would have been deteriorated. Those people who don't intend to post any sensible post would have just posted jokes to makes money here.

@hydraa You may have a point there but if the jokes are not any good then there would be no response and hence no earning.

@succeednow well, that can happen with the discussion as well. If the discussions are not any good then the responses would be far less.

I think random jokes as part of a general response or conversation is tolerable.
• Singapore
31 Jul 16
@louievill From what I understand as long as the joke in part of the story and that it is original then it's alright but sharing other peoples' jokes is not allowed.

@succeednow Oh yes, it's very easy to just copy paste jokes and recipes

Most jokes were written by someone else, and that's why they're not allowed mostly. Plus they don't really provide discussion. If you make a recipe for yourself, I think you can share about it if that isn't the only thing contained in the post, especially if you've changed it to fit your circumstances. Otherwise, both of those are best left alone.

@MarshaMusselman I understand from this discussion and responses from others that sharing of jokes is considered plagiarizing even though one shares jokes in good faith. Anyway, rules are rules and we have to abide by them.

I think there would be too many people who would abuse the right to tell jokes as a lot of jokes are off color - bad jokes.

@just4him There will always be people who try to abuse the system but if they are putting trashy stuff e.g. off colour, crude and racist jokes etc other people will shun and not respond. So what good will it do them then? I think only good, genuine and sincere contributions will survive and prosper.

@succeednow I agree, but we need to have rules so the site won't be abused.

I rarely find good jokes that are original and posting them here would probably not generate interesting discussion.
• Singapore

@tzwrites Good jokes can be found if you looked hard enough. I agree that they probably will not generate any or much meaningful discussions. Just a laugh or two, perhaps. That's about all.

@dyno10 I think if they flout the rules their posts may be deleted and in more serious cases banned from the site.

the moral is you have to only discuss the original contents not the copied one even the joke are same.... just character's changes...

I def think that jokes should be allowed, but I can understand their reasoning, It would be a copy and paste with unoriginal content frenzy. There would be so many discussions at an alarming rate sometimes I would imagine if people are just copying and pasting and creating 50 discussions a day
• Singapore

@rbailey83 If people are abusing the system, others will realize it and avoid them. Perhaps even report them.

do you plan to share original jokes you wrote or just share something you read elsewhere? do you plan to add other details to it, background story, etc?
• Singapore
31 Jul 16
@hereandthere Both original as well as written by others. But I guess this is a non-issue as jokes are definitely not allowed here.
