All of us here write.. but few of us have our sights set on Ebooks, novels, poetry books or may even be autobiographies. For those of us who have always dreamed of these but never really got to doing it here is a small inspiring story. We have all read the novels of AJ Cronin. He was a physician by profession. However, he developed Chronic gastric ulcer and need to take complete rest for six months. His rest in his Scottish farm house though initially was fun turned out to be "insufferable" in the long run. The author during this time had a story thought out in his mind, the story of a man's egotism and bitter pride. Nonetheless when he put pen to paper he realized that he had never written anything more than a prescription in the past ten years. He struggled to write 500 words a day at that time and he even threw his first draft away. He eventually finished his first novel The hatters castle in 1931 which was dramatized and later translated into 22 languages. The world lost a physician but gained a great novelist. He became a prolific writer after the success of his first novel. He won the National Book Award (U.S.), Favorite Novel of 1937, for 'The Citadel'. Some of his novel were made into moves and plays. Have you read any of Cronin's works? Which is your favorite novel?

Me neither. Too busy with working and writing a little bit here. If I take time to read, I don't do anything else.

'the spanish gardener' i reckon'd be my fav? one's only limited by their own perception 'f such. some don't believe that 'failure', e'en if'n only'n their own minds, 'tis merely a steppin' stone'f learnin' opportunities to get to where they wish - be't writin', 'r somethin' else they've set their sights'n.

@skysnap I was looking at Wikipedia after your comment and it seems there are not less than four movies adapted from Cronin's novels that were made in Hindi.

@skysnap You mean translations of his work or other novels?

I've never read any of his books but have heard of them. I am taking a creative writing course that will hopefully help me write a lot of these stories I have in my head.

I took a creative writing course a few years ago @simone10. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have written more stories in that one year than in my entire life.

First, we haven't all read him, I never heard of him. I'll need to look him up and see what I can find of his books.

@just4him Sounds like he was more popular in Asia than in America from the response I have got here.. funny though as so many of his novels were made into Broadway plays and movies. The Citadel was published in 1937 but they were popular in Asia toward the late 70's and most of us have read these novels in our college days.

I think I read The Citadel many years back but can't remember anymore the whole story. Anyway Cronin's story is truly inspiring and those lovely flowers are very inspiring too.

@jstory07 I am surprised .. I was so sure most of us here would have watched the movies based on his novels or at least read them.. I guess we Asians are more familiar with his works for some reason.
