Scared dogs

I have two rescue dogs. One of them was an extreme cruelty case. She was one of 15 found in appalling conditions and the owner went into psychiatric care. She had been kept indoors for the first 7 years of her life and never seen the outside world until she was rescued a year ago so consequently she is afraid of everything she sees, especially strangers.
Getting her into the car is a nightmare because she is quite a big dog. She is so scared that she struggles and I ended up pulling a muscle yesterday. I have to get her used to it because we are going on holiday in 10 days.
Does anyone else have a dog that is scared of the car and if so how do you deal with it?

I'm taking her to the vet on Sunday to get her weighed and desensitized. She is ok once she is in there, it's just getting her in there. I always take her somewhere nice so she associates it with good things.

@sprite1950 I hope that she is learning that she has nothing to fear. It's a good idea to associate the ride with good things.

I think I've left it a bit late as we are going on holiday a week tomorrow. Once she's in she's not too bad though. It's just getting her in to start with!

Nope, I don't have knowledge towards this, you might need a dog expert or a whisperer to deal with this phobia of hers. But It won't work over night as i have seen in one show, takes a while.
