Money wasted in elections?

I was just wondering how much money is spent during elections and googled it just like that. I was seriously shocked that so much money is spent on advertisements and all which could be used for some serious issues.
Just look at this pic and you will have an idea too. Its till 2012 though.

Better than half of the people in Congress in the U.S. are multi-millionaires, so why would they want a job that pays about $200,000 a year? The answer: Politics = power. And people will pay anything for that power.

@sherryericha No, thank you! We prefer our 'normal' politicians.
Our Chancellor, Mrs Merkel, was a physicist before she became a politician. Our President, Mr Gauck, was a pastor. Both used to live in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) where one couldn't become rich anyway.
Mrs Merkel owns a cottage in the countryside. Mr Trump wouldn't even consider it as a hut for his dog.
