Where's My Drinking Jacket?

Olde Wine Shades

On my way to another pub, I grabbed a snap of this one so I could do some research. The Olde Wine Shades claims to be the oldest pub in The City of London having been built in 1663 and survived the Great Fire three years later. Making it, probably, the only watering hole still using its original building, from that time. There is a smuggling tunnel running down to the River Thames, but following bomb damage in the war, this was closed. It was another of Charles Dickens' drinking dens, which does make you wonder where he found the time to write. Set on a, quiet, city lane it has old world charm about it, so much so that one needs a jacket and tie to get inside. This sets me a bit of a problem as I gave away all my suits and jackets when I went on sabbatical. I did save my Albert Einstein and Marvin the Martian ties though!

Sounds like an interesting place to visit except for the jacket and tie. These days those would not apply to me.

There's a bar in Downtown Colorado Springs that looks just like that. But you don't need a jacket and tie. I wear shorts!

You'd be barred before you got close to the door!

The comment about Charles Dickens made me laugh and now I remember that, when we visited the west of the United States, every bar, saloon or tavern we visited had a sign stating "Mark Twain was here". Same as Dickens.

Must remember to take a tie along next trip. It is supposed to be very old fashioned inside
