Do you tip a delivery man?

A good friend of mine had a horrible situation where the mattress delivery man coaxed her into giving a tip. When I say coaxed, I mean the man at the end of the job asked if she could help them out with a tip. She was so confused and she didn't have any cash. She offered to write them checks for their trouble. The delivery guy did not want that. She then said that maybe she could go to the bank and get the money. They ended up cleaning up and leaving the house without a word and then she started to change her sons diaper. They didn't say anything about her going to the bank so she figured they just went to their next job. One of the guys called her on the phone and was angry that she had not left the house yet. They said they were at the bank down the street waiting for the tip. This seems completely out line, but it started a discussion amongst my friends. Do you tip delivery men? I have never done so, nor have I even been asked to tip one.

When would you generally tip? If they had extra work to do?

Sounds pretty rude to me. How did they even know what bank anyway? Also sounds strange and if it was me, I would have called the company and said something about it. I've never had anything delivered except pizza and we do tip them just a bit. Maybe some day I might have enough money to have furniture or something delivered, who knows.

She had mentioned that she could go to Chase ( I changed it to the bank). They told her they were at the Chase Bank down the street. I think she did call the company. It was a very bizarre situation.

If by delivery you mean food that is ordered and sent to your home, yes we do. At Least since we moved back to Georgia. The guys/girls that deliver to us are usually college age and don't get a full salary so they depend on tips. They pay out of their own pocket for gas and don't see a dime out of the delivery fee. As for UPS, FEDEX ect. I'm unsure if they're allowed to accept tips. They are paid pretty well though compared to the pizza guy.

@ageekmommy When it comes to furniture delivery a lot of people do tip if the furniture is considerably heavy and the drivers really had to come out of their way. Either way, Tip or no, they don't have any right to treat customers that way. They'll do that to the wrong person eventually.

This was delivery man from a mattress company. I will edit to add that because I realize that I did not specify.

I do tip at restaurants and cab drivers. Have never heard of this kind of action. Most of the delivery men I deal with aren't concerned about a tip. They try to be in and out. These people were way too aggressive. She might want to report them.

Yeah either way they were very out of line! I was concerned for her safety.

Your friend should have reported that kind of behavior to the delivery man's employer. Tips are to be given if you like the service given to you and is not mandatory. Based on your friend's delivery guy's behavior, he doesn't deserve any.

Good to hear that they are filing a complaint. I really got irritated with the delivery man in your story. I am so affected. LOL.

She was flustered and has a toddler. Her husband is calling today to file a formal complaint.

This is certainly strange behaviour. Your friend may want to call the firm these people work for. I think this is coercion. My husband and I always give a tip, though. Especially my husband is generous. People doing such jobs don't earn much.

Yes, they truly don't make that much money. My brother worked for this type of firm in the past.

On the very rare occasions that I have takeaway food delivered , yes, other deliveries, no. Many deliveries are put straight into the mail box or left while householders are out so the householder doesn't even get to see the delivery person. The characters mentioned in this post seem to have making deliveries as a secondary line of income to extorting 'tips'.

Giving a tip is a gratuitous act. It's not something to be asked from the customer. I don't give tips. I work hard for every penny that I have. I just don't give for the sake of giving tips.

I tip depending on the service...so yes, if the service is bad...i don't tip...its usually not a problem here where i am at....but occasionally there are people who ask for a tip. The case you just mentioned...that's going too far...just for a tip.
