Is the baby really smiling?

My sleeping baby

My baby was just making some noise. After holding him for awhile, I put him back to the cot. While I was patting him, he was smiling and sleeping well now. He has started to smile when he was a few days old. I am not sure if he is really smiling or it's just the muscles on his face that make him look like smiling, but I am happy to see him smiling. At least I know when he is smiling, he is sleeping well. Isn't it nice to see the baby smiling?

Awwww - your little one is sooooo cute!! Don't they look so cute when they are sleeping? And oh yes, seeing a smile is just the best. True smile or not, it's makes you melt when you see that - and we just hope that is a sign that they are happy at that moment .

@sabtraversa Yes, they are in slumberland - in peace . . . and for the parents peace and QUIET!

They look cute when they sleep for sure. Because they don't cry.

Yes, you are right. I really love seeing the baby especially when he is smiling. I just imagine that he is happy in his dream. Though they also look cute when they cry, it's sad to see them crying actually. Someone told me, maybe the baby is playing with the dream fairies or angels.

A true smile or not, I think when he does so it means he's relaxed. Like... look at him! He's definitely enjoying his nap. So sweet!

Thanks. Yes, perhaps they feel really relaxed, hence they have that smile. I really enjoy looking at the kids when they are sleeping, even the older kids.

@marguicha Thanks. I just took the picture. He was sleeping sweetly, though not really smiling at the time I was taking the picture.

Yes, you are right. But I think they are worth watching even when they are throwing tantrums or crying sometimes too. I think they just look very adorable as their expressions are very natural.

What a sweet photo. I notice you have mittens on him - does he scratch himself without them?

Thanks. Yes, he just had a scratch near his eye two days ago as he "took off" the mitten by himself, though I already cut his finger nails. Also, he scratches me when I nurse him. It's quite painful. Why did you ask so? Is it not common to put on mittens for the babies in your country? Actually this is the first time I put the mittens on for my baby, my elder two just took off the mittens easily when they were still newborn, so I didn't bother to put them on too.

@kaka135 I've heard of people using them, but never had to for my two babies. They didn't scratch themselves.

Your baby's smile and his so sweet, particularly the first, is one of the most rewarding moments of parenthood. Enjoy him :)

Thanks! Though he is not my first baby, the third, I still enjoy spending time with him very much. It's really joyful spending time with the baby, though tiring too.

You reminded me my child when he was a baby. At that time he often smiled when he was sleeping. At that time he was just a little baby, so we wondered why he felt so happy. Perhaps he had a nice dream Now I realized that many babies are the same. They like to smile when they are sleeping

They can smile a lot earlier then people think. Mine used to smile in their sleep all the time.

Thanks. Yes, it's always happy for a parent to see the baby or child to be happy. I always enjoy looking at my children when they are sleeping, or doing anything.

The baby smile is only a natural reflex until 2 month old. The real smile usually happens starting between 2 and 3 month old. You baby is so cute.

We always enjoy seeing baby's smile with no particular reason at all. But my sister told me it's not a real smile at all. Just muscle twitching.
