A visit to the Manx Museum

The weather was too inclement to go very far today, so I visited the Manx Museum. I was pleasantly surprised by what was on display and it turned out to be a worthwhile visit. Of course they had all the usual stuff, such as fossils, local paintings and crafts, old local photographs and items from the Steam Packet company etcetera. They also had a few items that I did not expect. There was a section relating to the English Civil War, during which the island was staunchly Royalist. I was surprised to discover that James Stanley was the Lord of Mann at that time. I knew him as the 7th Earl of Derby and he was executed in my home town of Bolton. They also had a couple of large displays that would appeal to the postcard collectors on Mylot. Both cases were filled with old postcards from the days when saucy postcards were all the rage. One case showed postcards from before the censorship while the other contained a more subtle selection from after censorship was introduced. It was interesting to see the comparison between the two.

There is always something to do. As an Englishman I am accustomed to rain.

It was very enlightening because I never noticed the change when it happened.

@simone10 These were all the rage in Britain and far more abundant than the pictorial ones. Around the middle of the 20th century travel to the seaside for a holiday because more popular, although the journey often took a long time. Whenever a family took a seaside break they would send postcards to many friends and relatives. The saucy cartoon postcards became extremely popular and reigned for many decades. Sadly, they are scarcely seen these days. When I was young those postcards were a major part of every British seaside resort.

@SIMPLYD I did consider taking a photograph of the two postcard display cases, but they contained too many postcards. The postcards would not have been individually discernible.

The museum simply quoted pre censorship and post censorship, but apparently it took place in the 1950s, which explains why I do not remember it. The difference was not great, but was noticeable. As for Manx cats, no I never saw any while there.

@hereandthere There are several breeds of tailless dogs, but often we fail to notice because it is not uncommon.

Did those not exist in South Africa? They were available at all British resorts in the early days.

And there was me thinking the only winkles near the shore were the variety oft-eaten with the aid of a pin...

@Asylum Winkles and dirty postcards - I was thinking along the lines of Wee Willie Winkie, and the practice of consuming shellfish sold in small pots - cockles, winkles, mussels... Ah well.

Good that you spent some time visiting the museum even though you couldn't go too far away. I always like to visit museum, but I have not been visiting any for years, especially since I have young children. I will definitely bring them to museums when they are older. I always think there are many interesting things to see and learn in the museums.

I agree, although they are all too often presented in a boring manner. This is fine for adults, but tends to deter younger people.

I knew of Lord Derby's IOM connection - drank in the Man & Scythe many times in Bolton - saw the very stool Derby sat on in the pub before being taken out to be executed right outside - an event re-enacted in Bolton every year

He was executed as a result of the Bolton Massacre, so we have a monument on the spot that he was executed. His last hours were spent at the Man and Scythe pub, where the original chair still exists.

I think you Brits (is that the right term for people from your neck of the woods?) know far more history than we Americans do.
