Rainbow Jungle and Rainbow Birds

One of the places we visited in Western Australia during our recent holiday was Rainbow Jungle in Kalbarri. This bird park has an excellent reputation. There are large walk-through aviaries and many of the parrot varieties there breed each year. Some of the ones we saw included: scarlet-chested parrot, scarlet macaw, yellow-tailed cockatoo, Australian king parrot, elegant parrot, purple-crowned lorikeet, hooded parrot, mulga parrot, rainbow lorikeet, superb parrot, red-capped parrot, sun conure, gang-gang parrot, and princess parrot. I was interested in the yellow-tailed black cockatoo and was able to get a (not too good) photo of one with his tail spread. Can you see the intricate markings on the tail? We have white- and red-tailed cockatoos here but the yellow-tail is only found in the Eastern States. The gardens and surrounds are lovely. The camellias were in flower. Water-features are cooling and relaxing. While I'm sure most of us would prefer the birds to be flying free, well-run places like this do their part in ensuring the survival of rare species.

I wish you hadn't asked me that! I don't know. When I load slideshows now for some reason the music doesn't play and I can't see the preview until it's too late to change anything - so I took a guess with the music and loaded something from the suggestions. I'll try to go back and find out what it was.

Your slideshow on YouTube was great, so thanks for sharing all your wonderful photos! I am a big fan of birds, and my neighbor has two gorgeous macaws that everyone in the neighborhood just adores!

I've always thought of macaws as very noisy. Is that true?

@JudyEv Extremely noisy! Those birds will not stop chattering the entire day! But the funny thing is, after they've driven you crazy for about six months, you start to get used to the noise, and learn to tune it out. I don't even notice the birds anymore, because I'm so used to it by now. But if there's ever a day that those birds are gone for whatever reason, the silence becomes deafening! lol

@moffittjc Six months before you can tune the noise out? I think they'd be macaw and mash after a week in my house.

@JudyEv What a gorgeous bird it is. Are they endangered? I think we are pretty lucky in Australia, most of our Zoos and sanctuarys are well run. Not all, but most. Visitors are aware of what does and does not constitute animal cruelty and are able to report, and get action, if they feel what they see is maltreatment. My mother has a vague memory of a cockatoo that she heard but never saw, when she was a child. She said that it sounded like someone being murdered. I didn't like to tell her that to me, all cocky's sound like they are being strangled; she was adamant that this particular type was a rare phenomenon. Do you know of such a one?

The yellow-tail isn't endangered but our white-tailed cockatoos are all endangered. Like you, to me they all sound like they're being murdered. I'm not sure what your mother would have heard. The ed-tail cockatoo is found throughout most of Australia and two subspecies are under threat.

what a pretty bird.... i wonder why nature would put such detail in something and then place it where it would be hidden if the bird didn't spread its feathers.

That is very true. And the beautiful colours of butterflies are mostly seen when they're in flight. Once they land the wings close up and are quite drab.

Very nice slide show. I noticed you added music this time. It was fitting but kind of ran out before the pictures did. I hope to have fun messing with another slideshow myself.
