Gremlins After dark

I'm not afraid of the dark but one thing I notice is how any worries start to magnify and how fears can creep into your mind once the daylight goes.
I am on vacation at the moment. Yesterday my granddaughter met a little friend. I met her mother who seemed very nice and she asked if she could take her kayaking just down the road on the holiday site we are staying on. She gave me her contact details and off they went.
Everything felt fine until it started to get dark and I felt my granddaughter should have been back. The kayaking finished at 7.15 pm and it was now almost 9 pm, daylight was fading and she wasn't back.
The dark brought the gremlins along with it, I started to imagine the woman was not all she seemed and she may have run off with my granddaughter. It didn't help that she did not answer her phone so I went in search. Nothing .. I informed security and we set out to look for her. My fears were unfounded as while I was out searching my sister rang me to say she had returned home and I felt more than a little foolish.
When I thought back on the whole thing, everything had seemed fine until it got dark. Why is it that those nasty little fears creep into our minds as the daylight fades? Having said that I shall definitely be more careful who I trust with my granddaughter in future as for a short while I had convinced myself that something was wrong. I feel bad that I mistrusted the woman but what if my worst nightmare had come true and something had happened to her? It doesn't bear thinking about.

Yes they stopped to get something to eat and then played for a while but I didn't know this.

@sprite1950 Someone had to call you and inform you about the "change of program". I get mad when people do not let me know if they are late.

I think everyone would have that fear. She should have called you to let you know they were going to be leaving late.
