Undiagnosed Pneumonia?

A family member had a persistent dry cough for several weeks already and which is now diagnosed as pneumonia. For those who've had pneumonia, when did you suspect it was more than just a simple cough? How long did it take to recover from it? Do you take extra care to ensure you never get pneumonia again?

I had twice. At first it was just a simple cough then I got fever and I have trouble breathing. Every time I cough it wont stop and I have like a sticky plegm. I was confined in the hospital for almost a week to work it out. I hate taking meds specially anti biotics but I have no choice. When I get tired of taking tablets I ask for a injectable one. After having twice,we decided to have a pneumonia vaccine for 5 yrs.

@JustBhem i think it's doubly important for people like you, as additional protection. i guess it was done at the hospital? did your arm ache for a while?

@hereandthere That was last year I think. It's only 800 plus. I don't remember. It's good for 5 years.

@hereandthere No, i wasn't hospitalized . I had myself checked by a doctor and had an X-ray . From there she saw that i have pneumonia . I have to see a doctor because despite me taking antibiotics (self medication ) my cough wouldn't go away .

Never had pneumonia, hopefully, I don;t get it and hopefully, my family and loved ones don;t get it as well. I have a colleague who had pneumonia but didn't know that he has it. He was misdiagnosed and it took him another week to seek a second opinion. That's when he was informed that he had pneumonia. After treatment, he was well after a week or so.

@hereandthere he wasn't confined but he spent a day at ER. Got a load of medicines and he had to comeback for follow-up check-ups.

My husband had it and I think it was only 2/3 days before we realised that it was pneumonia. It took him weeks to recover, but he was 80 at the time, so a younger person may recover more quickly. He gets a jab against it now.

does he need to have the vaccine every year?

@jaboUK so the flu vaccine is yearly, while the pneumonia vaccine is just once

@hereandthere I was under the impression that he had it every year along with his flu jab, but I just asked him and he's only had it once. Apparently that's enough.

it seems to be mistaken as just a simple cough or cold or flu. i'm glad you're vaccinated now. they say it's good for 5 years.

Oh, I hope I have no pneumonia as I have dried coughs and sour throat for 2 days now. I am taking a lot of Vitamin C drinks like calamansi juice with honey. I hope to recover soon.

oh i hope not. you can check medical sites to know the other symptoms so you have an idea, but if you start feeling like something is strange, then go see a doctor.

@hereandthere I only have coughs and heavy chest. I think I catched a cold because I put my wet head not so far from the electric fan when I went to bed the other night. It was so hot and so I did that.

I don't know much about pneumonia. When I have had it I had a lot more than just a cough, and it most certainly was not a dry cough. I also had headache and fever too.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought a possible sign of pneumonia was an accompanying high fever that makes you sweat like crazy (I somehow remember a friend saying that). So my husband walked into emergency earlier last year because he had enough of the coughing (was still recovering from being sick, I think flu). They took an xray of his chest and there was some fluid build up - they told him he had pneumonia. He wasn't allowed to work for the rest of that week and just rested up with whatever the hospital gave him. Such a hard call because we (as a family) have long coughs . . . we tend to get bronchitis during cold winters - I've probably had walking pneumonia and didn't realize it.

One time while I was in the homeland, I became so sick with dry cough and took me nearly three weeks but I never went to the doctor to get checked,.. But when I cam back home here to Australia, I realised that maybe I had pneumonia ... Lucky I survived to come back home to my family.. lol..

I've not experienced this but my friend's husband was recently diagnosed with pneumonia after his chemotherapy. Did that relative of yours only seek treatment after several weeks of having dry cough?

yes, because the cough refused to "go away".

I was sick for months, and the only reason we even knew I was that sick was my doctor heard me coughing at a play ( I was the fife/woodwind player for 1776). He was at a show, and came up at intermission and told me to come by in the morning, was pretty sure I had pneumonia. he was right. I had already been sick for a month, and was sick for a couple more. Oh and I had broken ribs from a horse accident earlier, coughing with that was NOT fun

My husband has had pneumonia twice and we've now both been immunised against it. Vin had to sleep in a chair as he couldn't stop coughing if he laid down so at that point he went to the doctor.

I have no clue I drink ginger tea with "kalamansi" if I have a sore throat or cough. It's effective for me.
