Attention West Virginians!

United States

All persons should know that there is BIG difference between West Virginia and Virginia. They are TWO DIFFERENT STATES. I think that some persons may not realize that, based on some of the comments I have seen on myLot recently and based on my own experience down through the years. What became the STATE of West Virginia, USED to be the northwestern part of Virginia. However, when the southeastern part of Virginia decided to secede from the Union, after the start of the Civil War, the northwestern part of the state, the part of Virginia on the northwest side of the Appalachian mountains that separate it from Virginia, refused to secede. Persons who lived there voted to establish THAT part of Virginia as a separate state and West Virginia was admitted to the Union as the 35th state on June 20th, 1863. I was born and raised in WEST Virginia. I now live in Virginia. Geography is one of my favorite subjects, but I’m thinking that some persons don’t study maps like I do. So often has it happened that persons are confused about West Virginia being a SEPARATE state, that West Virginians came up with a new way to explain it. The conversation usually goes like this: “Where are you from?” “I’m from West Virginia.” “Oh, I’ve been to Virginia. My aunt and uncle live near Richmond.” “No, that’s Virginia. I’m from West, by God, Virginia.” Anyone who is from West Virginia, has probably used, or at least heard that expression before many times. I know I have. Have you ever heard that expression used by someone from West Virginia? Picture by Pixabay

I can relate to that. You say you live in Washington and people think you mean D.C. Yep. I know that happens a lot too.

@IreneVincent And most visitors think my climate is the same as Seattles. No. I'm on the dry side.

Although I have relatives living in the US, this is the first time I learn that they are separate states.

I study maps and enjoy geography very much. I love learning about different places. Your country is fascinating to me, because there are so many different islands that make up the Philippines. I would never be able to keep all of them straight. Which island do live on? Natutuwa akong makausap ka.

@josie_ Yes, I know where the island of Luzon is on the map. I don't live in West Virginia anymore. I live in Virginia. I have a friend who is from the Philippines. He lives in North Carolina, near my son. They are good friends.

@IreneVincent _ I live in the northern part of the island of Luzon. I'm more of a history buff and that's usually the only reason why I will look up maps. Are there many Filipinos in West Virginia? Your Tagalog is quite good.

A lot of people think I live in the State of Nevada, but I live in Nevada City, CALIFORNIA. We had our name before the state of Nevada (or even the territory of Nevada) even existed.

It's another one of those places that people get confused, I guess.

Yes, West Virginia is full of Country Roads. Curvy mountain roads and winding roads through the hills.
