Tonight while having dinner at a local restaurant a family seated near my husband and I were discussing Facebook and why the husband refuses to use the site. I'll be honest I understood exactly why he didn't want his young son on the site and he doesn't use the site at all. The father stated that Facebook has a lot of people posting that he doesn't trust and feels children shouldn't be using the site without a parent paying attention to what is being posted. Honestly, I feel parents should know what their children are doing online at any site. I think looking at the child and listening to him talk probably about 10 was in grade school for certain.
What do you think of Facebook? Would you let your 10 year old post there? What age would you feel comfortable letting your child post there? I know there are many teenagers on Facebook and the teens of today are more aware of dangers, then when I was a teenager. My daughter joined Facebook as a teenager and had a small friend list. She is an adult now.
I use Facebook to look for freebies and joined many years ago after a local restaurant offered a free meal when you bought one. I printed out a coupon and dinner sure was affordable. Another place in town offered free fruit, so I did that one also. Now I load coupons to my grocery card to save money and get free items. Every week there is a new free item and a discount coupon for buying certain items that week and this changes every week. Sometimes its buy $15 of fruit to save $5 and other times its buy $15 to save $5 on meat. Do you have stores in your area that have a card for that store?

When my kids were younger they wanted to use Facebook for the games. I let them. Now they don't bother with Facebook. It is stupid and seems way too old fashioned for them and me included. I still have a Facebook page but hardly use it. I have a second one I use to promote my writing. Other than that I don't bother. I find anything posted on Facebook to be pure waste. Nothing of meaning there. Unlike MyLot, Facebook has become the bad neighborhood in my book. At least here we have like minded people and it is a great place to interact.

I agree that Mylot is a great place to interact and learn so much from people posting about a variety of topics. Its great to be able to discuss so many subjects with people around the world. I have learned a lot about countries that I'm planning to visit when my husband and I retire soon. Planning to try new foods and learn a few more languages. My daughter uses Facebook to promote her crafts and has sold a few items. Thanks for posting about a way to use Facebook.

@Fishmomma You're welcome. I think Facebook needs a facelift. LOL. I find it boring. MyLot is a wonderland of learning, without a doubt. When you retire, enjoy it.

Your answer made me laugh, as there are times I'm not sure why I'm there and not right here where people are always friendly and helpful. Thanks for posting and sharing something to make me smile.

Facebook has an age restriction already before you can join although a lot of people circumvented this requirement in some way. In my opinion, the right age is 16 instead of the current one which is 13. I feel children are very vulnerable to predators when they use facebook so I do want for facebook to raise the age restriction higher.

I agree the age should be raised and 16 would be my pick also. Its hard to decide how old a child should be for any online site. Thanks for the comments and appreciate people taking time to post about Facebook.

Many of my friends have left because of drama, so completely understand leaving Facebook. I have a small friend list, which has made it easier to avoid the conflicts and use the site to save money. Its still not easy avoiding the politics, as a few people like to discuss issues. Thanks for posting on this topic.

it s OK for keeping up with what family and friends are doing but I'm not on it as much as I'm on here. I think if I was a parent I would certainly worry about a 10 year-old (and older) being on there.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Facebook and children on the site. Clearly, I would have been worried and think today parents have a hard time keeping their children safe with to much violence on the streets and its hard to know who to trust.

My daughter did the same thing and enjoyed chatting with friends. It was easy for me to know exactly where to find her, as she would be online when she finished school work. Thanks for posting about a way to use Facebook.

I realize many teenagers enjoy spending time with friends on Facebook and I'm only concerned when adults aren't aware of where their child is posting and that can be a problem at any site. People are so friendly on Mylot and its great to see so many replies on this topic. Thanks for posting about Facebook.

I have facebook and really like it. I don't post on there often and even less now that I found mylot. I like it much better here to posting. I use facebook to keep in contact with family and frinds I wouldn't otherwise. I have attended many reunions because of Facebook. I don't think a child should be on there. They are far too young for social media.

I think Facebook is a great help to staying in touch with friends and family. It certainly was when my brother was stationed in so many countries around the world. Thanks for posting about this topic, which certainly is a hard one based on answers I have received from others.
