Making Bento is definetly not for me

Bento is a popular trend that started in Japan where people are trying to decorate their packed lunch to look like a certain cute fictional character or any other designs. Just look at the example I embedded, The person worked hard to make the packed lunch looks like legos. Vegetables and meat were cut certain way to achieve certain shapes. Why spend hours of decorating your lunch if you are in a hurry? Also trimming the vegetable and meat will give you less side dishes because you trimmed it. What will you do the trimmings? Throw it away? I love to cook but the moment I cook I a dish I want to dig in while its hot instead of spending hours making it look like Hello Kitty or Pikachu. Would you spend hours trying to decorate your food instead of eating it right away? I guess it will work for moms who wants their kid to finish their school Lunch. there are people though who will spend a lot of time to decorate their own lunch.
My channel is introducing various recipes. This video is a recipe of ?LEGO Bento Lunch Box (Kyaraben)?.???????????????????????????????? (????)????????????????...

OK, I won't go THAT far. But I have done extreme shortcut bento type lunches for my kids. No, no characters and over the top cuteness like any of those images you've seen. I have used cookie cutters to make shaped sandwiches - make steamed carrot slices into flower shapes (only by tiny cookie cutters), make rice balls that are shaped (like stars or hearts, thanks to a rice ball mold). Otherwise, are you kidding me - no one in their right mind has time to pack such a lunch on mornings like that!!! They have a whole assortment of "things" you can buy to decorate your lunch . . . seaweed punches, food picks, food dividers, tiny condiment containers, food carving tools - and of course fun bento boxes.

@CaptAlbertWhisker Well I didn't really have a lot of trimmings because I didn't do anything that intricate. For the sandwich, I ate the rest of the parts I didn't put in the kids lunch. For seaweed trimmings, I tossed that into my lunch or just ate the rest of it. Boy, I sound like a human garbage can .

@much2say No food being wasted that what matters in the end. I saw someone making frittata or omelette out of the trimmings. I dont mind molds I guess because they were fast and nothing is wasted. its the trimmings and scultptures that makes me uncomfortable.

What do you do to the trimmings. I can't believe I take this seriously but the fact trimmings are wasted makes me feel sad of the wasted food for the sake of art. If I will try making bento I will make sure I will have use for thew trimmings. So there is a shortcut way to decorate food without spending it for hours. Just look at how much time was spent on this one.

@SIMPLYD Also decorating food is really not part of out culture. Maybe on restaurants but not at home.

Food will lose its warmth if we spent too much time trying to decorate them. I wont deny that Octopus hot dogs though looks kind of cute but I have no time and patience to carve them.

decorated character bento is a 2010 trend though. Sometimes they resort to using food coloring so they can achieve the look of a certain character. I saw a Sonic the hedgehog Bento video and they add food color to the scrambled eggs so it will look like Sonic.

I can understand if someone has a child who is a picky eater but even then, I think that might be carrying it a bit too far. As for me, I'm like you and want to eat right away. I don't particularly care what it looks like.

Some Bento paterns really look complicated and challenging to do. As in there are Bento artist who makes photo realistic photos out of food. Yeah eating it right a way is much more better for me because I am very impatient when I am hungry.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I do think some of the pictures I have seen are pretty cool but I just wouldn't have the patience to do that.

Is it going to make the food taste any better? I mean you're just going to be eating it, why go to all that "fancy" trouble, when you're just going to eat it?

There is a bento tutorial video on youtube where a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon cheese and potatoes took 49 minutes to make. I am sure that is longer if the video is not edited. It might be cool for a party but not for a daily meal. All that work to make it look like a cute teddy bear.

I guess the person was no doubt had nothing to do and has plenty of food and time to the point of even designing the food himself. Not for me, just cook the food and then eat it.

I prefer eating food while its warm too , Some fried foods gets soggy after few minutes. I hate it when they lose their crisp just because I am trying to make them look cute.

My husband loves to cook and he always presents his meals beautifully. I am more interested in not using too many dishes. :)

i think simple garnishing and plating is fine but making cartoon characters out of food is a different story. I love cooking but I hate decorating food.
