Preston Pub Sign Study The Sumners Arms a Rourkes Drift Connection

Originally called The Prince Albert after Queen Victoria’s consort, this Fulwood district bar was renamed the Sumners when its new landlord gave it his own name.
The pub is large and spacious, probably at its busiest on match days due to proximity to Preston North End’s football ground, as well as the Fulwood Barracks which house a public military museum I aim to visit soon.
The real excitement for me with this pub is however its association with the 1879 battle of Rourke’s Drift, as depicted in the movie, Zulu. as it was to be the home for the returning British chaplain, Reverent George Smith, known as Ammunition Smith during the attack for preparing and getting fresh ammo to the men throughout the final gruelling hours. He was one of the 11 heroes awarded the Victoria Cross for their outstanding bravery. His action in the actual events is not mentioned at all in the movie, in which he was not portrayed. He lived until 1918 and he is buried in Preston Municipal Cemetery.
The sign is a lovely symmetrical heraldic image.

I see you have brought some of your PUB history all the way to the battlefields of South Africa and from our History books - I remember learning about this Battle in my mid high school years. I believe Michael Caine (edited) played a part in that movie - I have seen it. What memories this history has conjured up today

@Inlemay it is a great movie and yes, Caine is in it - it was the film that made him a star

@arthurchappell i must tell you that my SA spell check said Cain was his name and every time I put the e on it again, it was removed.

@Inlemay you should be able to add Caine as a new word or tell the spell check to ignore the new word

I am enjoying follow on these different signage still, is this a new or older pub sign? Like new to you or a saved one from before the move?

this one is one seen since the move @Jessicalynnt - I have about 20 from a previous visit to the city but some of those have changed signs since then and a few of them have even closed down

I like looking at heraldic images. It seems, though, that a lot of families have several that are supposedly authentic, and nobody knows which one is the "real" one!

@petatonicsca it is quite a complex subject and there are many inauthentic shields just as with Scottish tartans

A medal like that and they don't even mention him. Sad.
