What are some great way to promote a book?

A writer can spend months and even years writing a book, editing it and finally getting it published, only to find hardly anyone actually cares enough to buy it, not even friends or family, regardless of how much it costs. And it can be a really great book... This makes me wonder... What can a writer/author do to get people interested in actually buying the book? What are some great ways to promote it that can in fact lead to actual sales?

I think social media is one of the best place to promote anything nowadays.

I agree. I think most people take advantage of social media to promote everything these days. I know a lot of authors have established their own pages on Twitter and Facebook and shared excerpts of their work, etc.

@lovebuglena Yeah I think it's a good idea. it's like a teaser, readers would like that.

@cahaya1983 I have FB and Twitter pages. Even a G+ page. I even made FB pages for some of my books... I do not think I've shared much excerpts from the books on those pages though and should start doing that.

@lovebuglena I'd be most ticked off if no-one bought my book.

I always thought the publisher was supposed to do that. They set authors up with interviews, book signings, etc.

That is true only if the author doesn't self-publish. Self-published authors do everything themselves or pay someone to do it for them.

As a new writer knows how difficult it is to get a publisher do it for him.

@LoriAMoore So if an author goes with a big time publisher, like simon and schuster for example, he/she would still be doing most of the book promotion?

print out a free chapter, as a tease, for people to dl and read . maybe it will tempt someone to buy it. an open reading of a few excerpts from the book in a local library or coffee shop with a meet and greet with the author afterwards, also an autograph signing for those who buy the book.

Social Media is your best bet. Everyone is on there and as soon as you have many followers or friends, the sales will start to come in and start multiplying. If the book is really good, the people will share it on their social media accounts and the book will have more and more sales.

All my books except one are in the poetry genre, which I've learned doesn't generate that many sales in general. So, it is harder for me..

@bacon147 My poet friends are not selling out either :( People don't want to spend money on poetry.

@lovebuglena If your poems are original and really talks to the soul, you should have no problem. There are alot of poetry books that are successful. Just keep writing and get better at it. You will see results.
