Favorite Gangster Film?

Do you have a favorite gangster movie? First of all … let me just say that any movie where the bad guys don't get what's coming to them ... no matter how many acts of mercy, kindness and benevolence they may show at random moments to prove they are human, that they have warm blood in their veins like everybody else instead of ice water, and that they really do have a heart … IF they don't reap what they sow in The End, that movie goes to the bottom of my list! Nope! Nope! There absolutely must be justice served. If not in a court of law, like imprisonment or the death penalty … even if they get their comeuppance some other way … I don't care! But they have to pay for their crimes! They must! I don't subscribe to the “bad guys can wear white sometimes and get away with murder” philosophy. Skip over my rant, MY pick for Number 1 gangster film of all times? The Godfather (1972). Not The Godfather II, not the Godfather III. Just … The Godfather! The sequels sucked! I have seen gangster films BEFORE and AFTER. Nothing beats that horse head in the bed scene!! It is also the movie where I became a fan of both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. What about you? Got a favorite gangsta film?

@cmoneyspinner Hello there! The Godfather is my favorite, too. I, too, don't like when criminals don't pay for their crimes. They had hurt someone either physically or financially, so they gotta pay.

This movie came out during my last year in high school. My best friend who was also my movie pal insisted we go see it. Mind you. She's the same one who decided for us to watch the musical “Oliver!”. Talk about varying taste in films. Oliver!? The Godfather? Actually, I sort of get the connection. Bill Sykes was a bad guy in “Oliver!” who got his due.

Did like "Good Fellas". Not to take away from the movie, but I actually liked the ending when the credits started rolling and they played that awesome music, with the piano interlude. Can't recall the song of the song. But I hear the tune in my head. I really like it!

@cmoneyspinner was it not the movie with the old lady who rented one of her rooms to the musician? That was a cool movie.

I remember that scene in the Godfather movie when we saw the horse's head. I sure did let a scream in that Toronto theater that night.

Wonder if viewers in different countries but same time zone all screamed at the same time?

I never saw this film. As I'm a horse-lover I didn't want to see a horse head in a bed so I've managed to dodge the film all these years.

It was totally unexpected. I'm sure most viewers like me though that the man himself was bleeding. When he lifted the bed sheet, I remember the audience in the movie theater screaming!

I thought Godfather II was good. III should never have been made.

Godfather is also one of my favorites ganster movies besides Papillon with Dustin Hoffman. I don´t know if Papillon is the original title of this movie. The prison was the Alcatras.

You mentioned Dustin Hoffman. Had to check it because I could only remember Steve McQueen as the main actor in Papillion (1973). That was a good movie too!

@cmoneyspinner yes, Dustin Hoffman was there as well as Steve McQueen. I remembered Hoffman well because he impressed me in that movie playing an introvert autistic prisoner. Well that was I remember.
