Play-doh: nice present, but not for my house.

Next Saturday is my granddaughter´s Sofía birthday. Of course, the last time she came she asked me what was I going to give her as a present. I don´t know why my daughter blushed. At 6 years of age, you can ask that. She usually likes to have me at her home. But next Saturday, she only wants a gift from me. We talked and she explained what she liked most in the world. Of course, they were the usual expensive toys that you see on commercials. I will not give in to that. So, talking with her AND Claudia, I discovered that she had a lot of molds and machines to use with play-doh, but no play-doh. I went to buy that today and I will give it on one condition: that she will not bring it to my home. I´m still of the old school where after the kids leave, you can put your house together again in a jiffy. What do you buy for 6 year old girls?

Dolls, coloring books, crayons, games. Mine usually didn't leave a mess and yes, we had play dough too.

@marguicha Play dough can make a mess if you're not careful but mine enjoyed making little things.

@RubyHawk I love the idea of play dough. But now I have the sort of house old ladies have. My daughters´ houses are made for children as mine was a long time ago.

My kids played with play-doh at an early age . . . but we always had it outside . . . on a large cookie sheet (and they had to keep it in that tray). My daughter liked craft and art supplies, particularly for drawing (sketch pads, pencils, markers). But at the time, she also loved books, toys and clothing related to particular characters she liked at the time, outdoor equipment like jumpropes, hula hoops, or balls (she was never a girly girl).

My granddaughter loves to paint. I would have prefered to buy her paint books and crayons. But with this new ideas of giving presents to kids every day of the year, my daughter had just bought her that.

@much2say Good idea! My daughters give their children more than what I would. And it seems that they give them less than what other parents give their kids.

@marguicha Presents every day of the year ??? I would be completely broke! I remember when my daughter was younger, she would be very upset that we wouldn't buy her this and that (meanwhile her friends were so spoiled to get whatever they wanted) . . . so she would end up drawing what she wanted .

It is a good play thing for kids but I also hate it in the house cause it will make a lot of mess.

Luckily, or unluckily, we don't know any. I find children really difficult to buy for these days. They seem to have so much and the choices in the toy range are so huge, it becomes really difficult.

I know. I used to make lists of books and my parents would pick a couple from that list. Those were the days when lucky girls like myself had 2 dolls.

@JudyEv I know I can´t buy her books yet. She just learned how to read and she is not very happy with the extra beautiful books her parents bought for her. She accepts them only if my daughter reads to her.

@marguicha That's a good idea - to make a list of what a person or child might like. Then the present is still a little bit of a surprise.

I would suggest toys that could make real food. Ofcourse still need the assistance from the parents to play the toys. Check this.:
In this video we will prepare a delicious ice cream, but if you know how to put it together or do not know how to make it work so you will find the answer. H...

I make real cookies with Sofía, but that is not a present, it is an activity with grandma.

@marguicha There are lots of toys that can use create edible foods. I have nothing against the inventor of play-doh, but my point it is possible that the kids will put it into their mouth.

My girls at that age loved play jewelry, play food and dress up things. They loved coloring, stickers and play-doh.
