Group Projects and Rehearsals at Classmate's Houses

I don't remember anymore if I did them way back in elementary, but I remember once in high school and college. In second year high school, I have this memory of us outside the front door of a classmate's house, seated at the metal garden set, working on a project. But I can't remember anymore whether we slept there or not, what we ate, how I got home, etc. All I remember is their smelly dog. Hehe! In college, we also went to a classmate's house after class. I remember waking up to a breakfast of fried rice and crispy pata (deep fried pork leg) and not knowing how to eat rice with a knife and fork. I still struggle, actually. Haha! I can't remember if I went to classmate's houses to rehearse for plays, dances and presentations. I wish my mother said no when my niece asked if she can bring her classmates over this weekend and that one will actually stay the night. We will have to hustle in the morning, on top of our own personal priorities. But then, do young people today even notice or care about the size or state of your house? Somehow, I feel that today's generation are casual and tolerant. Hmm, is that a good or a bad thing? I already told my niece, though, strictly no picture-taking inside or outside. Ever. So, have you done the same during your student days, or did your classmates come to your house instead? Which part of the house did you and your classmates do your school stuff?

@hereandthere They had a massive house and we did our rehearsal at the other end of the house .. and of course the dogs stopped barking when we left the garden area where they were kept ..

I have a grandniece whose classmates have been going to their house almost every day all because they were doing group projects or rehearsing special presentation. Sometimes when I go to their house I have no more chair to sit on so I just leave shaking my head. And by the way, I could not remember going to a classmates house to do such things. I have vivid memories certainly even if I am not young anymore hahaha. We did those things inside our school.

my niece's schedule is only 4 days a week, but she's out every day due to school work. how about your sons, did he go to classmates' houses or they came over to your house?

@hereandthere Neither did he. He had projects that he did himself or with my help but I don't remember him doing a group project at home with his classmates or him going to a classmate's house to do group projects.

I never had anyone over at my house - my parents didn't like me bringing anyone in to the house. I remember there were a few group projects - but not many that I can remember vividly. I seem to recall the teacher always gave us time to work on these group things in class. I never liked group projects - I preferred doing things solo - so I never did homework with friends either. If we needed to get together, I recall getting together in the lunch area or school library. I do think kids are casual and tolerant these days - in fact it seems like many of the parents are too - at least where we are.

@hereandthere My little son has done group projects only in class. Same with my oldest daughter . . . I could be wrong but it seems like the teachers don't put the kids in a situation where they have to do work outside the school these days - maybe they know how it's too difficult for some families to schedule getting together with others after school (some go to some day care soon after school til evening). Many people here won't let their kids do sleep overs - not like how it used to be when I was a kid.

how about your kids? we dusted and rearranged stuff, kept the bedroom doors closed. they worked and slept in the living room. practiced in the garage. they washed up every time they ate and swept the floor before they left.

yes my niece has been to 3 or 4 different classmate's houses already, so it's only fair to host them this time.

true. they were too busy talking, working on their project, practicing in the garage, while listening to music, checking their phones and facebook.

@Jessicalynnt i'm amazed at how they can do everything in cramped spaces like the kitchen table. there's food being prepared, reports and gadgets next to each other and they're not worried if something spills or falls.

@hereandthere unless something is gross rather than messy, I bet they wouldnt see, think of most kids rooms lol, that is their norm

i celebrated my birthday at home with my 3 closest friends. i also went in a classmate's house to do some homewrok. often, the residents worry about the food to be served. now, i think what is served is not so important anymore

true. students today don't mind what you serve them. my niece wanted to just fry the tinapa (smoked fish) for their brunch this morning, but since we already marinated the chicken last night, we decided she just fry a few pieces from it. what i noticed, though, is their "addiction" to instant noodles.

@hereandthere i had the craving for instant noodles and duck's egg (balut) when i conceived my son. now, he is also a noodles addict; just this afternoon, he cooked a pack for himself

@ridingbet at the supermarket the other night, the cart of the lady in front of me was mostly jumbo packs of different brands of potato chips and tall containers of instant noodles. i overheard her telling the cashier it was for her grandkids.

Can't remember because all those days spent at a classmate's house was spent drinking... lol! So is that the excuse you gave your parents , you'll be doing a 'school project'? Just kidding! Seriously, yes, I spent a good number of nights in a classmate's house to work on a school project or thesis. Good times!

I agree that the actual generations are casual and seem not to care a lot of the world around them. I am sure that we did nothing in the garden of the school back in the elementary. We had a big craft room where we did special projects.

we've talked about how tasks will be divided tomorrow, so i'm now thinking about how to use up the odds and ends in the fridge and what we have to buy from the market

It's so long ago that I can't really remember, but I think that you are right and youngsters won't notice the anything about the house.

what about your son and daughter? some parents here would rather "host" the classmates than let their children spend the night at other people's houses.

@hereandthere Oh yes, many a morning I'd come downstairs to find sleeping bodies all over the place, but that was more when they were late teenagers.

We go. and once all my friends came to my house. But we've never stayed the night. And only took group pictures where everyone is looking decent. Don't want anyone else seeing bad photos.

with the internet and social media, you can't tell who will share what. somehow, something always slips out and you're the last to know.

My friends came over all the time, but we played, had sleepovers, or dinners. I always preferred to study alone, even in college.

i studied best alone, too, and in the quiet. we played here in the garage or in front of the house. it was easier back then because there were fewer cars.

I recall group studies at home during high school and college days. No overnighters though as not easy to manage at home. It was good to spend time like that than be cooped up alone all the time - siva

No we didn't do that . What i did was invited my 3 best of friends to sleep over our house to attend the fiesta . We all had fun roaming around the town on the eve of the fiesta and on the day itself. Sometimes , i would invite some of my classmates and play at our front lawn , the tumbang preso and mother would serve us snacks . Such happy memories of childhood . But i never had that kind like yours .

I can remember that I went with my clssmates to the other classmates house and did the project. I was so shy before that I avoided them to come to my parents house except my best friend.
