Mary had a Hunk of Ham

Mary had a hunk of ham.
She carried it in her purse.
Everywhere that Mary went
The smell got worse and worse.
Finally, Mary dumped the ham.
She threw it in the trash.
Still, the smell from the ham didn't go away.
It just continued to last.
Mary's purse had to be pitched.
She learned an important lesson.
Keeping a ham in your purse
Can lead to indigestion.

What's the deal with Mary? She didn't want to ask for a doggie bag at the restaurant and just put the ham in her purse and forgot about it? It's a very entertaining poem, but this mystery is puzzling.
