This is an amazing national park located in the resort city of Jurmala, Latvia. It was established in 1997 and is the third largest national park in the country occupied by forests and mires, the most significant being The Great Kemeri Bog. Within the park are several lakes that are former lagoons of the Littorina Sea and Lake Kanieris. This park protects the famous natural mineral springs and mud that have been used for centuries for their therapeutic value. These springs led to the creation of many resorts, spas and sanitariums in the 19th century.
Not too many tourists prefer to venture as fas as Kemeri Nationa Park but it is well worth the trip. Here you can find ancient raised bogs, swamps, forests and lakes that emerged some 8,000 years ago when the sea retreated to its current position. It is not far to travel being only an hour’s train ride from Riga. The park is home to a wide variety of fauna including such rare birds as the black stork. You might spot moose, deer, elk, foxes, wolves and wild cattle and horses that were reintroduced into this ecosystem with help from the World Wildlife Fund. There are almost 900 varieties of flora among them certain plants that cannot be found anywhere else in the country. There is a vast network of wooden boardwalks and nature paths winding their way through the park. You can choose to walk through the park observing or take a rigorous 12km hike.
The picture is of wild horses at Kemeri.
