Keeping your personal life private on social media

Some may have read yet another warning online today about keeping our personal life private on social media sites.
Too many share locations and family details, including photos. We should not mention where children attend school, where we work and so much more.
It is being reported that some parents learned they put their children in danger on social sites by making friends with strangers and sharing photos online.
What are people thinking when they share so much person information with strangers on social media sites?

I have separate accounts for my business stuff. I do not share my location, children's info, personal photos or anything else that can put myself and family in danger. I even refuse to tell a lot of people in my area where I even live. I work out of my home and meet in public.

Yes, we saw someone post their address! She stated she would miss her house while on vacation-frightening.

@PatZAnthony People are crazy, they post the photos of their kids, they say where they go to school and at which hour they go to search for them. We are in a dangerous world.

I, for one, try to keep myself anonymous.
But I've met one of those who don't mind sharing personal things and I remember I asked her about that. She said that she has nothing to hide.
That's what she said. She has nothing to hide. I get that, I said, but don't you see the danger in that? She insists she has nothing to hide.
Oh, well. I guess she just sees it only from the point of view she wants to see it...

It seems to us sharing too much could certainly be dangerous.

@PatZAnthony Yes. Above, you pointed out that sharing too much could expose the children to online predators. I am very concerned about identity theft, so I give little to no personal info, unless necessary.

That is a good way to put it. Not sharing is as important as sharing on most sites.

The biggest thing that bothers me on FB is when people post their current location, when they are away from home at a restaurant or shop. They don't realize that they are letting everyone know they are away from their home so someone can go and rob them. So many of my friends do that and I keep warning them but I guess they aren't concerned.

I have no idea what they are thinking it is crazy to put your life out there for anyone to see and especially your children.

Some think nothing will happen to them, just to others.

I think that they don't think. If I had kids I would not give away info. As adults we shouldn't either.

You're right. It is frightening how much information is shared.

It is funny, we would never do these things with a perfect stranger locally, why is it okay to do online with perfect strangers? I have no idea why parents do it. I would be curious the stats on abductions and so on concerning these kinds of things.

You have the exact point I should have mentioned! Online strangers are still strangers!

It does seem many don't realize who is seeing what they post.

I think people don't really think about it. If I ever go somewhere, I always post it afterwards.

Right. We don't know who is reading or what their intentions are.
