My Dogs Got Skunked

I noticed this morning that there was a strong skunk smell around my house. When I went into the guest room, the smell was especially strong. It took me a while to realize that all three of my dogs had been skunk sprayed, and apparently had gone to the guest bed to roll around and rub the stink off afterward. At night they can only get to a small fenced area through the doggie door, so the skunk must have gone in there. To get rid of skunk smell the Humane Society recommends a mixture of 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap That amount was way more than enough to do all three of my dogs, as they are all under 25 pounds. I lathered them up and left the mixture on for about five minutes, then rinsed and washed them again with regular dog shampoo. They still stink a little, but it's much, much better. Now I just have to wash the bedding, I think I will add some baking soda to the washing machine as well.

Grandpa would use tomato sauce to get rid of skunk stink, dad said one of his brothers got skunked and that did the trick.

I suppose so @norcal but there are people round here who wouldn't have a clue what to do.

@rebelann I guess any kind of bath beats nothing, but no bath really does the job all the way.

That is a well-known old method.

Om gosh poor doggies. That is awful and poor you having to put up with the smell. It lingers for so long.

When we had a dog for several years, no cat would come into our garden, the cats knew there was a dog inside. The dog didn't hurt them, but, it used to chase them, try to touch them. Imagine how stink the skunk's spray is, the dog can roll in a corp of some animal to get stinky, but, even the dog can't stand the skunk smell. The dogs has a very strong sense of smell. Poor dogs, I wonder what they did to get that spray :-)

I think it comes out the back, but the skunk directs it to the desired target. One got the most direct hit, but they all stink.

Coincidentally, I was outside earlier, and I saw a skunk across the street. Glad he stayed over there.

I guess it's an active season for them, maybe getting ready to hibernate or something. I've been smelling them a lot lately.
