Woodland walk ... a photo journey

10 minutes..., That's all it took me to get from my work placement,  to this wonderful woodland.... well, it's  proper name is Winkworth Arboretum. I looked the word arboretum up,  as I was not sure of it's definition. This is what I found..., for those of you, who like me, don't  know.... The word,  Arboretum,  comes from the latin word for tree, which is Arbor. An Arboretum  is land given over to the planting of specimen, trees and shrubs,  many different varieties of trees are grown for research and education, and design and ornamental purposes, and sometimes the trees and shrubs are cultivated for exhibition. I had a two hour break... so I drove to the ' woodlands',   and wandered  around  for an hour, and 15 minutes. It was warm and peaceful, and there was a beautiful golden sunlight,  bathing the whole area.  I believe that this particular shade of sunlight,  is only seen in  September,... there is something  special about it. There are lots of seating areas, some with tables,  some just big logs or cut down tree trunks to sit on... and some wood carvings too. I have included one of the carvings in the slideshow, to show you.  There were not many flowers, but as you would expect..,  there was lots of trees and shrubs, from all over the world, including some giant red wood trees, and oak trees, ash, sycamore, birche trees and beach trees, and.., a lovely golden tree that shone out brighter than all the others,  and won my heart..., it was a huge japanese acer.  I took a photo of the name plate on it.   Every tree, shrub or plant had an ID plate on it, saying what it was etc and where from... Which I found interesting and helpful at the time. While sitting on one of the logs, I was reading the brochure,  and saw that next month they were going to have a special woodland fungi walk.... I like photographing fungi too... but won't  be here,  so I took myself of in search of fungi...., and found it...,  some weird looking things...,  which again, I have included in the slideshow.  Well that's  it... I had to keep looking at my watch..., because I get lost in my own little world when i'm taking photos... and as they say time flys when you're  having fun... Click on the link below to see some of the things I saw today.., enjoy a walk in the woods with me...

@sueznewz2 When you consider that 6 months ago, these beautiful bright and vibrant coloured leaves were just tiny little cute buds, and then they burst and were lush green leaves, which provided us with shade during the hot months, and now that those days are parting, they give us a beautiful show of colours. Its really kinda cool isn't it?

As I studied Latin for 8 years, of course I knew where arboretum comes from, in Italian we call the trees "alberi". I enjoyed your slideshow, this is a beautiful place.

@sueznewz2 Yes Latin is a complex and difficult language to learn, even for Italians. It was mandatory when I was a student, back in the 60's. I think that now only the students who decide to become lawyers and doctors have to study Latin and ancient Greek.

That sounds like such a lovely place to take a walk. I would love to walk in the trees and be able to read their names.
