I could be close to running out of gas....

No, not me, I am running full speed ahead LOL. But, we have a 500 gallon propane tank. Propane is used for outside cooking on the grill or the smoker and inside for the gas cook-top and the fireplace. Once in a while I ask my husband, "Have you checked the propane?" and he usually says yes, he does keep an eye on it. Funny thing happening now - it has said 69% full for several months. That's impossible. He tapped the gauge and it didn't' move. Obviously the gauge isn't working. He has a propane company coming tomorrow to fill the tank. We know that we get about two years from one fill-up so if the gauge is broken it's not really a big deal. We own the tank, so we would have to pay to have that gauge replaced. If we rented the tank they the company would have to pay. When they 'fill' the tank it's not 100%, they can't there has to be room for expansion. Oh the things one learns living in the country. So that's my gassy story for today. Photo: pixabay.com/en/propane-tank-liquid-gas-energy-gas-156510/

We don't deal with propane at all here.

We have very few places that have natural gas and it's costs a fortune. So electric and propane are the fuels of choice.

My sister has a propane tank as well--it is amazing that you get that much use from your tank!

@AbbyGreenhill I think my sister has propane heat--she lives up in Oregon--and winter is cold there

It's 500 gallons...now if we had propane heat we'd use that tank in less than a year.

Filling my little five gallon tank cost about eight dollars so 500 must be a fortune.

It is 1.79 a gallon which is a little more than you just paid.

@JamesHxstatic it could be 600 or 700 to fill, depending on how much is still in the tank. But it will last two years or more.

My parents had a propane tank when I was a kid. They changed it over to natural gas a few years after they bought the house. Will you be replacing the gauge?

My husband will ask the delivery guy what it would cost/involve. We don't have natural gas where we live and if we did it would cost way more than propane.

@just4him It may be cheaper elsewhere, but not here...I live in the boonies, we don;t even have cable (not that I would want it anyway.)

@AbbyGreenhill I always thought natural gas was cheaper. I'm glad then that the propane lasts as long as it does.

The thought of using any kind of gas scares me. We've had some scary close calls I remember one time I lived out in the country in a mobile home and it used propane like you do I was impressed with how long it lasted but it still scared me.

It's just as safe as any other product. I would only worry if I was delivery guy.

@gudheart That's how it should be LOL. I do like that our tank is underground.

It can be dangerous, which is why I tend to leave the gas handling to others more experienced than myself.

When we first moved to our home 25 years ago, the heating for the house was gas through a propane tank. Then it got real expensive and we got rid of it and have one of those heating systems that is combined with heat and air conditioning.

@AbbyGreenhill lol!!!! If that even worked, which I am not sure it does, dad make up woppers all the time. I would prob just set a date, Oct 1st or whatever, and have it topped off on or near that date each year, thus preventing the Large Bill of Dooooooom. mom does that, she set her top off dates around the time the price drops too
