Ways To Save Money In The Laundry And Keep Clothes Longer

Of course we have all heard of using cold water to save energy. You can save about 30 cents on each laundry load. Powdered laundry soaps may not dissolve as well in cold and unless you have very dirty and even greasy clothes you don't need to use warm. Odor and mildew growth in front load machines is caused by using fabric softener. Using distilled white vinegar will keep your washer sweet smelling, make clothes come out softer and, save you money. Using less detergent also helps to save money. Use half the recommended amount. Clothes may look better and last longer. Try generic brands. Many are made by leading manufacturers. Dry clothes on the clothesline for a fresh smell. If they are hung correctly you may not have to do any ironing. Dry clean only clothes can also get a fresh look and feel. Keep out of direct sunlight. If you do need to iron some articles of clothing by putting a piece of aluminum foil under the cover you can iron at a lower heat because the foil will hold heat. If you hate ironing you can hang what you are going to wear on the back of the bathroom door before showering and it can take wrinkles out and even give it a fresh smell.

Also if you inside out your clothes you can make your clothes last longer (it won't fade)

I know when our dryer broke the light bill was reduced significantly!! Also have been washing cold, even whites for some time now!! Always buy generic soap as well. I just learned that if you use white vinegar instead of fabric softener it will make your towels softer!!

We haven't used hot water since I was little. I always thought the clothes got dingy though. My daughter does the laundry and they aren't dingy anymore. I guess it's cause I never sorted them and she does.

Sorting is a good idea. I always did a small load and tried not to overload so they would all get clean.

@celticeagle I don't even remember the last time I used anything but dryer sheets. Some things I don't even use those, like towels.

I like to use vinegar in place of fabric softner. Right now though we are using the $1 stuff from Dollar Tree. We are also using the $1 laundry soap too, but we've already been using it from the other dollar stores. No idea if it even really works well, but it's a lot easier to come up with $1 at a time to buy stuff.

i used to do most of that before i got disabled and try and get my daughter to do it but she does not like the smell of vinegar even though i tell her it washes out or goes away in a few minutes. plus she swears anything but Gain detergent breaks her out.

If she used less I bet she wouldn't break out at all.

I don´t use fabric softener. It seems that it is not so good for your skin. And when you use powder soap, you can disolve it in a cup of hot water and add it later on. I don´t iron my clothes. I place them on hangers to dry (in the sun for whites and in shadowy places for coloured clothes.
